Plagiarism involves using others' words or ideas without giving them proper credit. It can be intentional or unintentional and includes directly copying information from sources without citation, purchasing papers, or having someone else write papers. Plagiarism violates ECU's Code of Conduct and can result in failing grades, probation, or expulsion. To avoid plagiarism, students should allow time for research, take good notes, paraphrase information in their own words, cite direct quotations, and give credit to all sources used.
This document provides instructions for generating keywords to effectively search databases on a topic. It explains that keywords sum up a topic in a few words but can be tricky to come up with. It recommends choosing a strong topic first and then removing common words from a research question or topic sentence to identify relevant nouns. Synonyms of those nouns should then be brainstormed. The best keywords should be combined using Boolean operators like AND and OR to search the database and locate relevant information while allowing for variations in terminology. The keywords may need to be refined if the topic changes during research.
The document provides instructions for searching the library catalog to find resources housed at ECU Libraries. There are two ways to access the catalog: through the Library Catalog link or OneSearch on the library homepage. Users can search by title, author, journal, or subject, and subject searches allow the use of subject headings from the Library of Congress to better describe topics. The document also provides tips for building effective search strings using Boolean operators and limiters to refine results by format, date, or other fields.

This document discusses tools for measuring the impact of research at different levels. It outlines journal-level metrics like Impact Factor, Eigenfactor, SJR, and SNIP that measure the influence of entire journals. Article-level tools include citation counts from databases and altmetrics that track attention. Author-level impact is assessed using h-index from sources like Scopus and Google Scholar, and other metrics like Publish or Perish and Impact Story profiles. Tracking impact at multiple levels can help with tasks like tenure review and grant applications.
Scholarly journals are academic publications written by specialists and scholars that contain original research results and scholarship. The articles are peer-reviewed by editorial boards or outside scholars before publication and are usually 5+ pages long, though most are between 7-16 pages. They use in-text citations and include a bibliography and/or footnotes in APA style. Scholarly journals are often required resources for course assignments.
This document introduces a research guide for hospitality leadership. It defines information literacy as the ability to recognize when information is needed and locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information. Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning by allowing learners to master content and assume greater control over their learning. The guide contains objectives for students to define evidence-based leadership, evaluate sources, search for books in the library catalog, use trade journals, locate and analyze statistics and business information, define plagiarism, and identify APA citations.
Locating your primary source using your secondary sourcejkh156
The document provides tips for locating a primary source using a secondary source for a biology assignment. It instructs students to find an article of interest from a news or magazine website, note keywords, publication titles, author names, and use those to search databases to find the original primary source article or a similar one on the topic. An example is provided where a BBC news article about a new hybrid grass leads to the primary source published in Scientific Reports about a grass that is part lollium perenne and festuca pratensis.
Identifying primary and secondary sources in the sciencesjkh156
This document defines and provides examples of primary and secondary sources in scientific research. Primary sources are original research conducted by scientists, such as lab notebooks and reports or scholarly research articles. Secondary sources analyze and review primary sources to create a response, including magazine articles, review articles, encyclopedias, and textbooks. When determining if a scholarly article is primary or secondary, original research articles present one study's methodology, results and conclusions, while review articles analyze multiple primary sources on a topic.

It describes how the author, David Andrews, was able to cure his type 2 diabetes after being hospitalized. His friend Jonathan conducted additional research and they developed a unique method using diet and lifestyle changes to control insulin levels. The book contains their findings on managing diabetes naturally and reversing it within 4 weeks by regulating insulin production and glucose levels without medication. It claims readers can learn the "hidden secrets" doctors don't share to cure diabetes, even pre-diabetes, in as little as one week. Links are provided to posts about the book on Facebook, Pinterest, Google Plus and Academia.edu
The document reports a 783% increase in something, but provides no other context or details to explain this large percentage increase. This document proposes a pilot research project to use social media (blog, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook) to increase participation and understanding of diabetes self-management education among high-risk diabetic patients at VA hospitals. The goal is to build online tools to engage these patients, measure results through medical records, and improve compliance with treatment regimens. It aims to test if social media can create new communication channels between patients and providers and enhance access to healthcare. The technical approach involves using these digital platforms for education and analyzing patient data to measure the impact on health outcomes over time.
This document discusses how social media can help reduce health disparities related to diabetes. It notes that AskManny, a social network for those with diabetes, has over 28,000 members, 40% of whom log on at least once a month. The majority of members have type 2 diabetes. Most unique visitors to the site are from the United States. Surveys found that participation in AskManny's programs leads many members to feel a greater sense of connection and better equipped to make positive changes in managing their diabetes. The document outlines the growing costs and prevalence of diabetes in the United States. It argues that social networks can help address stigma, isolation, and lack of personalized care that those with diabetes often face.
