American bluegrass music has its roots in traditional folk music from Ireland, Scotland, England and African American gospel and blues. It evolved in the 1940s when musicians like the Carter Family and Bill Monroe popularized the genre. Bluegrass has since expanded and remains popular today through bands like Nickel Creek and Union Station that continue to perform traditional bluegrass style.
