George Nassef presented a self-healing distributed rendering system built on Amazon AWS that uses spot instances to reduce costs. The system uses Redis for job queuing and MongoDB to log system and application data. A separate process monitors MongoDB logs to identify and requeue jobs before failures occur, enabling the system to self-heal as it scales across availability zones and regions while using low-cost spot instances that can be terminated at any time. After hundreds of thousands of jobs, the system experienced only two failures unrelated to the dynamic infrastructure.
