Methods: In the Take Control game patients in treatment for
addiction act out crushing and rejecting behaviors in an environment
(bar, alleyway, kitchen, etc.) of their choice and choose the substance
to counteract. Reaching out and grabbing behaviors such as those
related to seeking help and support are supported by the Kinect's
recognition of hand grabbing actions (vs. pointing or punching).
The game, designed to used before or after an addiction treatment
appointment, aims to transfer the skills and behaviors learned by
playing this game into real-life action. We seek to improve treatment
outcomes for addicted patients, including attitude, self-efficacy, and
behavior related to substance use.
Discussion: The release version will be integrated into an appointment/therapy session and
used as a substance use treatment/recovery tool. During 2015 the game is being tested in multiple
clinics via standardized instruments to assess effectiveness in improving treatment outcomes.

and evaluating a motion-controlled virtual reality (VR) game based on
Kinect for Windows v2 for patients to develop power over substance-
related cues. Cue-exposure therapy and extinguishing behaviors in a
virtual environments have been shown to improve substance abuse
treatment outcomes (e.g.,Girard B, et al, Cyberpsychol Behav. 2009;

Results: In initial usability testing with patients in treatment for
substance abuse, patients chose a background and then kicked, punched or
otherwise thwarted virtual bottles of alcohol that were moving toward them.
Participants response to the game was positive, indicating that the game was
fun and engaging, understandable, and appropriate.

Colleague #1 Current trends: There are a number of trends within the addiction recovery and treatment field. One of the most utilized modalities within the field of addiction recovery may be cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT seeks to teach those recovering from addiction and other mental illness to find connections between their thoughts, feelings and even their actions or behaviors (Kiluk & Carroll, 2013). The cognitive behavioral approach often encourages those participating in the treatment to identify, and challenge potential thinking errors that may be contributing to their current addiction, or even mental illness. Another widely used treatment trend is the 12-step program. This program is one that is based on peer support groups that meet together regularly to provide support, guidance and care as each individual works the program as a whole (AAWS, 2012). The basic assumption of the intervention model is that people can help one another achieve and maintain abstinence from substances, and healing cannot come about until one surrenders to a higher power (AAWS, 2012). This is a widely spread program that is estimated to be used by the majority of treatment centers throughout the country (Doweiko, 2019). Future trends: There have been a number of developments and shifts within the field of addiction recovery therapy. It seems that societal trends, to a certain extent, may have some sort of impact on the trends as they develop as well. For example, there has been more of an emphasis placed on holistic health, and holistic treatment in a number of fields. This trend may be seen being implemented into the field of substance abuse treatment, and recovery as well. Drake (2020) suggests that holistic care should be integrated into a multidisciplinary approach within the substance abuse field. The concept of incorporating a registered dietician to the multidisciplinary approach supports the “moniker” of providing a holistic approach to those in substance abuse disorder treatment. Implementing this style of holistic care is said to improve the overall quality of treatment and recovery. It has been reported that those with substance use disorders have become well quicker, fewer symptoms, and sustain recovery longer when they follow principles of quality nutrition (Drake, 2020). Similarly, there have been various studies implementing the Integrative Body Mind Spirit (I-BMS) intervention among those with substance use disorders. This intervention utilizes Western practices in congruence with Eastern philosophies, as well as techniques (Rentala et al., 2020) There are a number of specific interventions utilized within this particular program that all seek to foster a deeper connection between body, mind and spirit. Yet, changing self-regulatory behavior is fundamental to the self-management of complex lifestyle-related chronic conditions such as depression and substance use disorder - two top contributors to the global burden of disease and disability. To optimize treatments and address these burdens, methods to facilitate behavior change and self-regulation must be better understood in relation to their neurobiological underpinnings. Treatment strategies can then be developed that leverage the recent advances in immersive environments, machine learning, and wearable sensing technology and apply them to treat depression, manage addictions, and facilitate behavior change using a precision medicine model that is personalized to the individual. This presentation will review the conceptual framework and protocol for a large multi-subject longitudinal study named Project ENGAGE. The ENGAGE study integrates neuroscience with behavioral science to better understand the self-regulation related mechanisms of behavior change for improving mood and weight outcomes among adults with comorbid depression and obesity. We collect assays of three self-regulation targets (emotion, cognition, and self-reflection) in multiple settings: neuroimaging and behavioral lab-based measures, virtual reality, and passive smartphone sampling.
