STRENGTHENING OUR FUTURE

As a multicultural nation, Australia is more than
just its history, its economy, or even its people.
Australia is defined by its character, its wellbeing,
its backbone, and its ability to flourish within the
midst of a constantly changing global
environment.
Forward-thinking leaders from Asia and Australia
and around the world are increasingly aware of
the mutual benefits of working together, and
actively seek forums from within which to engage
in meaningful collaborative discourse.
However, to date the vehicles for allowing this
kind of progressive dialogue at the grassroots
level have been limited. Where there have been
talks between government and business, a gap
exists for the broader community to engage.
Recognising this, the Asian Leadership Network
of Australia (ALNA) was formed, as a not-for-profit
organisation, with the express aim of facilitating a
substantive shared platform where corporate
Australia and Asian leaders can connect.
Founding member of ALNA, Farrukh Hussain is
the recipient of the Multicultural Award for
Excellence 2012 from the Government of Victoria
and in 2010 was the co-founder of the South Asian
Community Link Group - Australasia.
Having represented the South Asian community
on a broad range of issues, Farrukh’s dedicated
ongoing commitments include working with
various charities and fundraising with
organisations such as The Royal Childrens
Hospital and The Australian Red Cross. Farrukh
has also hosted many associated events with both
the business, community and government
sectors, including in the capacity of Master of
Ceremonies for the then current prime minister
and ministerial attendees.
ALNA’s timely inception was also propelled by the
strong and esteemed support of Dr. Sylvia Walton
AO, the recently retired chancellor of Victoria’s La
Trobe University, whose significant and insightful
input is an ongoing invaluable resource to the
growing and important community network that
ALNA has become. Dr. Walton’s considerable
wealth of professional knowledge and experience
precedes her impeccable reputation as an
Australian educator of extraordinary
accomplishment.
On every level, the reasons for proactively
deepening the relationships between Asia and
Australia now necessitate a more holistic
approach, beyond developing marketing
channels, supporting research and development,
technology transfer and foreign investment,
currently key issues in national policy debate.
ALNA promotes a broader picture, where the
Australasian community, now inherently a part of
our national landscape, can make an effective and
valuable contribution to discussions on education,
jobs, housing, the environment, health, transport,
childcare, retail and banking, and every other area
concerning our community as a whole.
With this in mind, ALNA’s long-term vision of
effectual, inclusive public interaction between
Asian, Australian and multicultural
representatives, is underpinned by its belief in the
core values of:
• Social cohesion and respect for Australian law
• Respect for all cultures and belief systems held
by Australia today
• A spirit of equity and access for all
• A desire to actively seek to learn, understand
and be involved in each other’s cultural lives
• A commitment and desire to collectively
work together.
Multiculturalism is a major contributor to a
modern and sophisticated Australia and as a
pioneering think tank ALNA plans to advance the
links between community stakeholders, corporate
Australia, government and business. By building
on the principles of social inclusiveness, open
discussion and mutual respect, it is ALNA’s
intention to help steer a new trend in national
awareness and efficacy for the benefit of our
future generations by nurturing strong and
healthy Australasian relationships in an
ever-evolving multicultural Australia.
