Fort Kearny was an important stop for Mormon pioneers and others traveling west, serving as an oasis in the desert. It was originally purchased from the Pawnee nation for $2,000 in goods and was later attacked, though not seriously damaged, by Mormons and Omahas. The fort provided a brief respite for travelers like Wilford Woodruff and Eliza R. Snow on their journey west.
