A study of 96 preschool children previously diagnosed with wheezing found that exposure to maternal smoking increased airway inflammation and decreased lung function in the children. Paternal smoking did not have the same effect, possibly because children spend more time with their mothers during preschool years. The document encourages parents who smoke to seek smoking cessation programs to protect their children's lung health.
