Alkenes are hydrocarbons that contain at least one carbon-carbon double bond, giving them a trigonal planar molecular geometry and 120 degree bond angles. Common alkenes like ethene and propene were discussed as examples, with ethene having two carbons and propene having three carbons in its double bond. Alkenes are important starting materials that are used to make products like alcohols, plastics, detergents, and fuel due to the reactivity of their semi-movable carbon-carbon double bonds.
