Objective
To work in a challenging and dynamic environment where I can implement my mathematical expertise and provide a
different approach to problem solving. Mathematics has allowed me to develop an analytical way of thinking and to
become more flexible when it comes to learning new material and adapting theoretical concepts to real life solutions.
Programming experience
• While learning Android SDK, I’ve created a free Android App with 7000 downloads.
• C/C++, Java, Algorithms and Data Structures, comfortable with Linux
• Teaching Assistant for a Mathematical Modeling class with MATLAB at Polytechnic University of Bucharest
• Teaching Assistant for PIC 10A ”Introduction to programming” at UCLA
• Currently taking a class in Machine Learning at UCLA: http://math.ucla.edu/~dakuang/math285J/
Education
• University of California, Los Angeles 2011-2016
PhD in Mathematics
• University of Bucharest, Romania 2009-2011
M.S. in Cryptography and Code Theory
• University of Bucharest, Romania 2006-2009
B.S. in Mathematics and Informatics
Mathematical Research and Teaching Assistant at UCLA, 2011-2016
Research: Operator Algebras (C*algebras and von Neumann algebras), Functional Analysis and Group theory.
Some of the theoretical properties of groups I’ve studied have consequences in Expander Graphs
(sparse graphs, which have a strong connectivity property).
Teaching: Analysis, Calculus for Life Sciences Students, Probability for Life Sciences Students, Calculus of Several
Variables.
Fellowships and prizes
• Marie-Curie Early Stage Research Fellowship in Operator Algebras, Cardiff University, U.K. 2011
• Silver Medal at the South Eastern European Mathematical Olympiad for University Students 2008
• First Place, Romanian Mathematical Olympiad for Highschool Students, Iasi, Romania 2006
Publications
• A.Galatan, S. Popa, SMOOTH BIMODULES AND COHOMOLOGY OF II1 FACTORS
Journal of the Institute of Mathematics of Jussieu / February 2016, pp 1 - 33
Conferences
• Oberwolfach’s ”Arbeitsgemeinschaft” workshop in Superrigidity of Group Actions
at the Oberwolfach Research Institute, Germany 2014
• Non-commutative geometry and Operator Algebras at Vanderbilt University 2011
• SIMUMAT Summer School in Numerical Analysis, Bilbao, Spain 2010
• Summer School for undergraduate students in Applied Mathematics 2008
at Ioanian University, Corfu, Greece
Miscellaneous
• Fluent in Romanian (native) and English.
