Earlier, these activities were being carried on by deploying a satisfactory file system with security imposed on the same. This trend started changing with the introduction of the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Systems or Content Management Platforms like Alfresco and SharePoint. These platforms not only kept the documents in a securely accessible environment, they allowed the documents to flow through the business operations involving internal and external stakeholders through different solutions. The Business Process Management (BPM) also got involved to enable the same. Now, it is a mandate for the Enterprise Content Management platforms to provide the workflow management. Due to this, more business functions have adopted the ECM to run their processes. With that, the types of files to be catered to in ECM and the complexity of the workflows have increased significantly. One more significant parameter which has emerged in the IT Industry worldwide is the dependency of a particular system on the other systems to operate. The world of IT is moving towards open-source technologies where there are fewer vendor dependencies, no vendor lock-in criteria, more opportunities to customize the solution as per the business requirements. In the era of enterprise systems without (or with limited) boundaries, one needs to be very astute in choosing the right Content Management System. In this article, we have compared two major ECM systems - Alfresco and SharePoint. Both the platforms are widely used across the globe by a number of enterprises. However, we have highlighted some parameters where Alfresco and SharePoint widely differ. We are sure that this comparison would help the prospective customers choose the right platform for their content management system.
