Editor's Notes

  1. Thank the teacher (if in classroom) and the class for being there today. Introduce yourself and relate to the university. Alumni Favorite team Major etc. Introduce purpose of presentation today. Focus on relating position to the class Recruiting for District Manager position Be sure to connect with class by either relating to the university or telling a joke/funny story. The most effective presentations include real life examples so instead of explaining each part of the job give examples of activities that fall under that category. MAKE SURE TO BRING SAMPLES.
  2. Introduce the classroom to Aldi. Read off the bullet points. Pass out samples of Aldi exclusive products. Let them raise their hand and provide input.
  3. Explain the flat management structure. Quick transfer of information. Efficient and transparent decision making. Hiring from within. Ability to make an impact immediately.
  4. OPEN WITH A QUESTION: Can anyone tell me what you think management means? Management directly relates to the District Manager position. BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR OWN PERSONAL EXAMPLES. District Managers are in charge of overseeing 4-5 stores. This includes: running audits hiring employees coaching managers and maintaining store standards The Aldi Management System was developed to assist managers in completing these tasks. it details how to delegate tasks without overstepping your boundaries specifies who your direct & personnel leader and the principle of limited oversight that Aldi follows In class you learn about different management styles and different terms such as goal setting, motivation, feedback, quality control, and personnel issues. The DM position is involved in all of those areas.
  5. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!! Emphasize the fact that it will feel like operating your own business. As a District Manager, you will have significant autonomy. You will independently manage 4-5 stores while meeting with your director once a week at most. You have significant liberty to develop your own schedule. However, you must still meet deadlines and maintain consistent performance. To do so you must manage your time from store to store to ensure that each store is operating up to par. You are also the human resources representative for all of your stores
  6. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!! Hiring employees is a crucial component to the District Manager position. this can be done through large hiring events or one on one interviews you seek employees with the right attitude because you can always train them to meet performance goals but you cannot train attitude Good judgment in hiring will limit future turnovers attitude is the most important but it is also important to ensure employees understand the job duties and wishes to start a career not just a job Employee development one-on-one meetings performance reviews EIDFs
  7. On a day-to-day basis managers at Aldi are heavily involved in goal setting and coaching. Goal setting and coaching can be done in various situations. You will most likely set goals during performance reviews with your managers. These will trickle down to the employees when the store manager reviews their performance and sets goals with them. Coaching is important when issuing EIDFs or employment incident reports. This will help employees keep a positive morale and trust with you. One of the most important things as a manager is learning to delegate. However, you must be careful to delegate the correct things. Forward and backward delegation can decrease efficiency and trust between you and your managers.
  8. A critical component of the DM position, is quality control. Distract manager walks are conducted to identify safety, neatness, and out of stock concerns. These are some of the biggest priorities. The walk and other checks at the store level all focus on maintaining the standards detailed in the customer satisfaction pyramid. Product, Image and Service. Auditing and inventory are two other forms of checks the DM performs to control quality. auditing ensures that the store is handling proper cash handling procedures. You check employee cash tills, count the safe, and verify random expenses for accuracy and theft. inventory ensures that we understand exactly what we have in the store and where we are losing inventory. The personnel and technical duties of a DM are equally important. Now Karen will speak about how the DM position relates to the marketing position.
  9. As a district manager, it is our duty to market our stores with high standards for quality. We do this by using skills and strategies obtained through:
  10. As a food retailer, our customers associate the cleanliness of our stores with the quality of our products. A well-maintained premises projects an image of competence and company pride. Providing a clean, positive and professional image through personal appearance and store cleanliness is a critical component of overall customer satisfaction.
  11. Population Studies: ALDI analyzes the demographics of each market region. This research guides us to market and sell different products for diverse cultures. •Example: Plantains and yuca are growing in popularity in Southern Florida. These products are only sold in limited regions and not available in other divisions to avoid losses. •Zip Code Studies: ALDI is conducting market research for company expansion. By taking the zip codes of the customers that shop at our stores, we are able to pinpoint a potential location to open a future ALDI store.
  12. Almost 95% of our products are sold under ALDI-exclusive brands. Neat, clean and full product displays will build customer confidence that our products are of the highest quality. Maintaining excellence in key areas at all times ensures we meet our primary goal of satisfying our customers. Our Special Buy program serves a distinct strategic purpose. They promote excitement for ALDI shoppers by increasing our product variety and presenting customers with exceptional opportunities for value. The store layout, isle set ups, and proper product displays are crucial and should be themed accordingly as a consumer attraction. Packaging-example Use the sample food package you brought as an example and hold it up on display for the entire room. ALDI corporation designs their own brands, so there are numerous barcodes for increased efficiency. Use a promotional poster, i.e. baby promo or any other recent signage. Hold it up/pass it around the classroom as an example. They are designed by corporate to attract consumers and promote specials and new additions to the store
  13. Weekly advertisements - are an important component of our Company marketing strategy. They serve to attract new customers, generate customer excitement, increase sales, and promote our ALDI-exclusive brands. Through our advertisements, we strive to highlight our superior value and reinforce our price leadership position. We place increased emphasis on ensuring that every advertised item is readily available for the customer and properly displayed. Grand Openings: ALDI grand openings are a great way to promote our stores. Circulars and billboards go out weeks in advance. When presenting this slide, pull the ALDI ad website up on the screen and pass out paper weekly ads
  14. Autonomy With Aldi you’re granted a lot of autonomy but with that comes responsibility. Such as upholding efficiency standards and the freedom to implement new methods that maximize said efficiency within your stores. If you’ve ever been to an Aldi store you would notice what is different about us is that we have few employees on at once. We try to maximize our productivity level and that is influenced by efficient employees. These efficient employees are hired directly by the District Manager because they serve as the Human resource representative. As a DM you are responsible for hiring these employees as if it were your own business. As an autonomous being within the company you have the freedom to create your own schedule. Again with this autonomy comes the responsibility of staying organized and on top of things. Especially at Aldi, it is important to have great time management skills because as a DM you’re typically running 4-5 stores. You not have to manage yourself, employees, manager, and 4-5 stores but you also have the opportunity to choose different managing styles depending on the store needs.
  15. Aldi is rapidly growing, and new divisions and store are opening at a fast pace. At the corporate level the number of stores will double by 2020 At the store level you have the freedom to be creative and develop ideas At the company level you have the opportunity to actively participate in committees and develop new ideas that create a lasting impact For example real estate and purchasing Opportunity to grow and empower your workforce through coaching, one on one meetings, peer advising, but most importantly goal setting not only for yourself, employees, and stores, but also for the company as a whole.
  16. At Aldi, it is a very hands on approach and the overall involvement level is high. You won’t be going store to store to sit behind a desk and do financials and paper work. Of course that’s part of the job but a lot of the time you’ll be on the sales floor engaging with customers and having direct contact with your employees and store managers to gauge how well your stores are doing. On a larger scale you also have an opportunity to be involved in store openings Which includes hosting hiring events and rolling out circulars to get the word out To conclude an entrepreneur is the perfect fit for the District Manager Position because You have the technical training and education but also the drive and ambition to make a business succeed.
  17. I want to start off by giving a brief explanation of Aldi’s financial structure, Aldi is one of the biggest private companies in the world, which means it’s funding doesn’t come from speculative markets, making it independent from market trends, and therefore offering steadier job positions. The fact that the company’s culture is so unique, makes Aldi one of the companies that promotes the most from within, giving lots of opportunities to all of them who aim for excellence. Although many companies become too costly to run in the long run, the decentralized business model Aldi has adopted, has kept it alive for more than 70 years! Now expanding all over the US securing a big share of the market. So, how do Aldi district managers make this possible financially speaking?
  18. When you are working in a fast moving market such as the groceries one, it is clear there are many things there are not under your control. At ALDI, we are confident that by being familiar with our products movement throughout recent history, we can accurately plan for future trends, potentially making big changes in the numbers of the company but more important in our customer’s pockets. Since our company operates in a broad market that extends throughout the country, it is key to take into account seasonality and demographics effects on the demand.
  19. As a district manager, designating projects to subordinates is part of the strive for efficiency. Internal auditing is the way by which we make sure stores run smoothly. During these audits, district managers have the opportunity to find errors and inefficiencies that may be having a significant financial foot-print. What we aim for, is to come up with solutions, share them with our peers, and ensure aldi’s productivity standards are met.
  20. The best way to ensure our practices are functioning properly and that our employees are well trained is by running inventories, which can be described as the backbone of the business. It is with inventory numbers that we, as DMs, get a glimpse of the business financial health. At the end of the day, one of the aspects stores strive the most for, is to minimize losses. For example, a small reduction on the produce loss of a single item on a store can have an enormous impact to our financial standing. Store’s hundred dollar losses become thousand dollar accounts at the divisional level and sum up to millionaire amounts nationwide. Finally we put reports next to each other and find areas of opportunities.
  21. Until now I have held myself to speak about the in-store operations. But what about the macroeconomic impact a DM can have within the organization? There is where committees play a big role at. Committees group DMs with the purpose of focusing efforts on certain aspects of the business so that areas of opportunity are scrutinized. Here, there are listed only a couple of them. For example the purchasing committee may decide on marketing a special type of product because their market studies have shown them a new market trend. The real estate committee may find a certain location with lots of potential that hasn’t been exploited yet.
  22. When becoming a DM you will have the chance to have an impact both in the micro and macro side of the business, but since all our savings are passed down to our customers, at the end of the day, as Benjamin Franklin once said: Every penny saved, is a penny earned.
  23. WHY ALDI Salary Year 1 $80K per year starting salary Year 2 $88K Year 3 $95K Year 4 $100K Important points regarding the salary Goal is to attract the best of the best Based on the level of responsibility of the job There is no catch. It is what the position is worth This alone is not the reason to take the job
  24. THE RESPONSIBILITIES   Position of high responsibility Much autonomy and flexibility Recognized as a leader
  25. as a DM you also have an opportunity to grow the business locally as well as globally you’re in an impacting position at a company that promotes from within like many other positions at Aldi there is a clearly defined path.   Opportunity to make a difference Impacting position for the company Clearly defined growth opportunities
  26. THE DISTRICT MANAGER INTERNSHIP Inform students about how the internship provides insight into the retail industry. Discuss how the internship is structured Discuss examples of past intern projects Discuss how the internship position can lead to a District Manager Position $900 per week salary Weeks 1-2: Shadow a peer advisor, gaining insight into day-to-day responsibilities.
