Phoenix Comicon 2017
Our Masquerade Progress Photos
Valentin, Casey, Jeff, Kamilha, Brenna, Zach, Elizabeth, Sophie,
and Taylor
(possibly Ashley if 10 people are allowed)
Before we begin…
We just wanted to let the viewer
know that some of the following
costumes are showcased on a
standard mannequin, therefore due
to it being one size, the costumes
might not appear that they fit
perfectly… Otherwise, please enjoy
seeing our fun creations!
Jasmine
Aladdin
Aladdin and Jasmine
EXPLAINED
Jasmine: We used the influences of Disney’s Magic Kingdom’s ‘Park” Jasmine, as well as the
Jasmine on Broadway. Brenna wanted to stick to the classic look, but yet wanted to wear
something she felt comfortable and beautiful in throughout the day. Taking concepts from
the Broadway production, we followed a Renaissance-style pattern, and focused on adding
Arabian-themed embroidery.
What missing: crown-piece and jewels to the dress
Aladdin: We went with a renaissance pattern, and altered it to be more time appropriate.
The sleeves are detachable, along with the cape. His chain was handcrafted and painted. We
used the movie and Disney's Magic Kingdom's ‘Park’ Aladdin as our main influence. We
added the bits of red to add a royal flare and our own touch to the character
What’s missing: hat and shoes
Jafar
Jafar
EXPLAINED
Jafar was made from a samurai pattern and a
steampunk cloak pattern. The hat was crafted from a
DIY step-by-step website on Pinterest. The snake on
the staff was 3D printed and attached to PVC piping.
We used the cartoon as our biggest influence, and
added Broadway’s cape design into the overall look.
We figured having a flowing cape with give a neat
effect while walking across the stage.
What’s missing: the shoulders to the cape have not
been attached. We will be using spirit gum and fake
haiir to attach a custom made beard and eyebrows.
Genie
Genie (Cont.)
Genie
EXPLAINED
The Genie was influenced by the California adventure’s live performance
and the Broadway show. We wanted the Genie to be an entertainer
during the skit, and have comfortable movement. The pants were made
through a women’s yoga pattern. There were sequins, beaded, and dyed
blue. Originally they were white, and we planned to do a fade dye
starting from bottom-up. Unfortunately, the pants slipped off the tub in
the middle of the night, and we woke up to fully covered blue pants (we
worked with our mistake haha)
The jacket is made form a Civil War pattern, but we curved the bottom
part with a diagonal cut to have a more theatrical appeal. The Genie
does varies magic tricks on the stage, which require his jacket to snap
off quickly for quick changes with props. He also has a jaw-movable
mask, as an elderly man, which he uses in the beginning of the number.
The mask was made by taking a plain plastic white mask and using brads
to create a moving jaw system.
What’s missing: shoes, hat, rhinestones, and buttons on the jacket.
Costumer will be covered in blue airbrush paint and spirit gum/fake hair
will be used to create the beard.
The Elephant
The Elephant (cont.)
The Elephant
EXPLAINED
We are using PVC pipe, wood, and chicken
wire to create a life-size papier-mâché
elephant. The elephant is cut into a four
piece puzzle, in order to quickly take it
apart and set up. We also had to stabilize
the base, so Aladdin could come in riding it.
The elephant is pushed on wheels, by two
hidden actors. At the moment the elephant
is not papier-mâchéd, in fear that it might
rain and ruin the piece.
The Skirts
Belly Dancer Belts
We used a circle skirt pattern, cut into four layers of white.
We then took white tulle with gold glitter, and gold glitter
tulle and sewed them together, using a fishing line hem.
The fishing line had to be burned in order to give it that
stiffness. Since we didn’t have the fancy tools, we used a
turkey baser as our melting piece… Which caught fire…
But only once! ;-)
The Skirts (cont.)
Favorite Design Least Favorite
These pictures are examples of how we used
the glitter tulle. We only did one layer of tulle,
because we began to realize that we were
loosing the ‘flowy-ness’ of the skirt during
our dance rehearsal. The tulle was causing
the skirt to droop, rather than look full/fluffy.
We also realized changing the waist design
effected the fluffiness of he skirt as well.
Our Pattern Selection for our Tops
The belts are created out of two panels of
fabric. The first is a sheer sequined fabric;
the second panel is stitched to a sheer
golden fabric, lined with a golden glitter
ribbon. It’s sewed onto an elastic band
(which is hand stitched together in the
back), with a beautiful lace trim on the
top. On the sides- to the back- is a long
tassel trim. It originally was red tassels,
but we hand painted them with gold
fabric paint, and sealed them with a top
coat of acrylic glitter paint. We would like
to continue to add more beading to the
tassel portion.
The Belts
“The Peacock”
“Golden Camel”
Peacocks and Camels
Explained
Camel: Top is made out of a Khaleesi pattern, by using elastic bands
that have a glitter embroidery. I made a base of the pattern out of
cotton, then use that to formulate my design. I sequined the sides
and added a back zipper. The skirt is two panels with an elastic
waist-band, and sequins trim. The head dress was red satin roses,
spray painted gold, then hand painted with a sheer gold glitter
acrylic paint for depth. I hot glued them to a headband, along with
left over tulle and kabob sticks, that I dipped in glitter/glue. I also
created “rave wings” (not in photo) using a swing flag pattern
from color guard. Wings attach to two 1ft sticks, then wrap around
the wrists for security.
What’s missing: more jewels will be added and sequins booty-
shorts; costumer will be fully covered in gold metallic airbrush paint
Peacock: Made from a Yaya Han Pattern, the corset was designed
to be very tight fitting. The front of the skirt is just one panel, and
left open in the back to create a feather train, along with a peacock
embroidered fabric-veil. The veil attaches to the back of the corset
and the wrists.
What’s missing: headdress and feather-train
Arabian Dancer (#1)
Arabian Dancer (#2 and #3)
Arabian Dancer (#4)
Arabian Dancer (#5)
Each top and costume is designed to make each individual
performer feel comfortable and beautiful while they’re on stage.
Some of the belts sit higher on the girls that don’t want to show to
much stomach, while other girls have higher crop-tops to reveal
more skin. Each piece was custom made to fit the vision of each girl,
in the hopes to make them truly feel like an Arabian princess 
Why is each top different?
Jewelry
Jewelry was various necklaces that we attached through chainmail material and wire.
Then we covered the jewels with painters tape, and spray painted them gold. We
finished them up with a sheer gold-dust paint and rhinestones/pearls
Arabian Pants
We originally wanted the Arabian
dancers to have pants. We made
two pants, when we changed the
costume design, due to Aladdin’s
color choices. Instead of white
and silver, we changed it to white
and gold. Presently, we might
use the pants for two of the girls
(since that it their preference,
but we would need to change
out the sequins due to color.
Dancers could keep the dancer
belts to help stay consistent.
Thank you for taking the time to see
our cosplay creations!

The elephant is pushed on wheels, by two hidden actors. At the moment the elephant is not papier-mâchéd, in fear that it might rain and ruin the piece.

It originally was red tassels, but we hand painted them with gold fabric paint, and sealed them with a top coat of acrylic glitter paint. We would like to continue to add more beading to the tassel portion. The Belts
  • 20. Peacocks and Camels Explained Camel: Top is made out of a Khaleesi pattern, by using elastic bands that have a glitter embroidery. I made a base of the pattern out of cotton, then use that to formulate my design. I sequined the sides and added a back zipper. The skirt is two panels with an elastic waist-band, and sequins trim. The head dress was red satin roses, spray painted gold, then hand painted with a sheer gold glitter acrylic paint for depth. I hot glued them to a headband, along with left over tulle and kabob sticks, that I dipped in glitter/glue. I also created “rave wings” (not in photo) using a swing flag pattern from color guard. Wings attach to two 1ft sticks, then wrap around the wrists for security. What’s missing: more jewels will be added and sequins booty- shorts; costumer will be fully covered in gold metallic airbrush paint Peacock: Made from a Yaya Han Pattern, the corset was designed to be very tight fitting. The front of the skirt is just one panel, and left open in the back to create a feather train, along with a peacock embroidered fabric-veil. The veil attaches to the back of the corset and the wrists. What’s missing: headdress and feather-train

Each piece was custom made to fit the vision of each girl, in the hopes to make them truly feel like an Arabian princess  Why is each top different?
  • 26. Jewelry Jewelry was various necklaces that we attached through chainmail material and wire. Then we covered the jewels with painters tape, and spray painted them gold. We finished them up with a sheer gold-dust paint and rhinestones/pearls
  • 27. Arabian Pants We originally wanted the Arabian dancers to have pants. We made two pants, when we changed the costume design, due to Aladdin’s color choices. Instead of white and silver, we changed it to white and gold. Presently, we might use the pants for two of the girls (since that it their preference, but we would need to change out the sequins due to color. Dancers could keep the dancer belts to help stay consistent.
