Al Andalus was the Arabic name given to parts of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Muslims between 711 and 1492 AD. During this period, important cultural figures like the musician Ziryab and scholar Abu ‘l-Hasam flourished in cities like Cordoba. Ultimately, the Christian Reconquista retook the Iberian Peninsula for Catholic kingdoms by 1492.
