Makerere University has been closed due to a student strike over a new tuition policy. The policy requires students to pay 60% of their fees before registering for classes and exams, which the students reject as unfair. Guild President Ann Adeke said students were not consulted about the policy, which has failed at other universities. During protests, police fired tear gas and live bullets, injuring one student. The National Council for Higher Education then ordered Makerere closed until the dispute is resolved.
