AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. In 2007, about 33.2 million people worldwide were living with AIDS/HIV and 2.1 million had died from it. AIDS mostly affects less economically developed countries and can lead to 11.6 million AIDS orphans in Africa. People can become infected with HIV, which causes AIDS, by having unprotected sex or sharing needles with an infected person, or from an infected mother during birth or breastfeeding. Prevention methods include using contraceptives and not sharing needles. World AIDS Day is observed internationally on December 1st.
