A talk I gave on the Agile Portugal 2016 conference, based on Jason Yip's article on Daily Meetings. Daily stand-up meetings have become a common ritual of many teams, especially in Agile software development. However, there are many subtle details that distinguish effective stand-ups from a waste of time. I’m going to share some stories and experiences on this subject and what are the common problems and some technics that can help out some of these teams.

With the rise of IoT and more and more Controllers and Sensors coming we as developers have now a lot more SDKs and Controller OS than we can handle. As a IoT developer I value a system that I can leverage that can take away a lot of the complexity of communication, interoperability, security, updating, and lets me focus on my business logic and what I want to build. This talk will focus on the Windows 10 IoT Core OS and how to build IoT Apps for it, how to connect sensors and actuators to the GPIO of a Raspberry Pi running the W10 IoT Core, how to debug on that device, and how to connect it to the Azure Cloud in a secure way and use that cloud to control the device. This will be a technical talk with a lot of code and almost no slides, and a great opportunity to get to know these technologies in a bit more deepness.

Tales from the Trenches – Leveraging Agile on Fixed Fee Projects
This was a session given at Agile Portugal 2015 by myself and my good friend and colegue Ricardo Jesus.
We come here to share our experiences on the last 6 years delivering various waves of 2 very large projects, for 2 very big customers of Microsoft Consulting Services, on 2 different teams we’ve lead. We would like to share our mistakes, our wins and how we leveraged Agile methodologies to deliver on time and on budget projects that were scoped and planed as fixed fee, with all iterations built on top of a Waterfall model, and as most projects, with a very tight schedule.
As you may know Agile methodologies like SCRUM, XP, KANBAN are most commonly used on Time & Materials type of projects where the Stakeholders control a budget (time and/or money) and decide the best way to use that budget on each iteration. In the case of Fixed Fee the scope of the project is set at the start of the project and now the team has to deliver on time and on budget all the features defined in the scope.
On top of that Microsoft Consulting Services has a very strict delivery framework built on top of a waterfall model… So we had to adapt and build a agile framework that would optimize the team’s performance and would deliver all the milestones that were set with the stakeholders and project management team. We learned a lot from these projects: the value of a strongly committed teams, the price of wasteful processes, the value of rapidly adapt and facilitating change and, most importantly, that what works now may not be so on the next iteration. We want to share all these lessons and practical examples that we’ve lived and learned from.

Azure IoT Hub is a PaaS scalable and multi-tenant platform that allows developers to easely build features like device registration, secure bidirectional communication between their core platform and their devices in the field, and at the same time be the hub for all the massive amount of data being generated by all those sensors that needs to be processed and stored, and with all that has become a core piece of a IoT solution that you want to build. On this session you will get to know the Azure IoT hub pretty well, getting introduced to the main features and seeing it in action and how fast you can deploy a solution with it and take the most out of Azure and your sensors to start making the most out of those sensors and their data.
NUI the 3rd wave - Techdays2010

The way we interact with technology has suffered great changes in the last couple of years. Ever since the invention of the command line interface that we have been seeing changes in the way we interact with technology. Today we have touch technology on our PCs, cellphones, GPS, we use voice commands to control our cars, and we even use gestures to play video games. But we need to understand the differences and resemblances between the different modules of interactions and there "ancestors" so that we can truly take advantage of this change. In some ways like when the GUI came out, NUI are here to stay, and its our duty as IT professionals to take the maximum advantage of this new technology and new way of HCI.
How Natural User Interfaces are changing Human Computer Interaction
(Presentation that I did at UX-LX in 2010)
We are living a new ‘wave’ of innovation in Human-Computer Interaction, as new devices and technologies are allowing the creation of new forms of interaction. These new technologies are the building blocks for us, software developers, designers, and architects, to create more natural and intuitive interfaces for our applications. These new technologies are, not only multi-touch enabled, but also allow multiple users to interact simultaneously with the application, in a collaborative manner, opening a world of possibilities and potential for next generation software to take advantage of.
New platforms and tools are emerging every day, such as Microsoft Surface, Apple's Iphone, Pranav Mistry's Sixth Sense, and the upcoming Xbox360's Project Natal are great examples of this ‘new wave’ of technology, and the positive feedback these new ideas are receiving prove that users value this change. I think that now it’s important to stop and evaluate the impact we, as IT Professionals, can have on the way users interact with devices, with information and even each other, and how we can take advantage of these new tools and add value to our applications.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

The system's ability to streamline workflows and automate ticket routing significantly reduces the time taken to process each ticket, making the process faster and more efficient. Mobile access allows field technicians to update ticket information on the go, ensuring that the latest information is always available and accelerating the locate process. Overall, Utilocate not only enhances the efficiency and accuracy of locate ticket management but also improves safety by minimizing the risk of utility damage through precise and timely locates.
Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
