Action for Autism SWOT Analysis
Strengths —
Honest cause, easy to support. Attractive to families of adults with autism and the adults
themselves, humanitarians, and others. Wide appeal.
Simple idea to understand, with a strong emotional core. Message is basic but powerful
enough to move and motivate people. Accessible.
Destruction of Second Mile provides closure for victims, while serving as a foundation for
something of high moral value. Good transition.

Weaknesses —
Housing and areas and programs need to be made specific before the project can pro-
ceed. Must organize ideas / plans. Manage.
Scale of venture is very ambitious, and there are many variables to be taken into ac-
count as the project proceeds. Possible hangups.

Opportunities —
Programs and property for adults w/ autism, strengthening community through inclusion
of disabled and disenfranchised people. Reflects well on organization and agency.
Set an example to other communities that adults with autism can integrate, capable of
anything their counterparts are. Symbolic.
Destruction of Second Mile is an opportunity to improve Penn State’s image, and
strengthen reputation of State College. Solidarity.
Threats —
Media attracted to destruction of Second Mile, making Sandusky suddenly relevant
again. If executed badly, could generate bad press. Dangerous.
Politically correct terminology must be handled with care. A mistake in language could
offend many people and mean an enormous loss in credibility. Sensitivity.
Lack of funding could ground the project. Need to reach the right people through the
right channels to make it work. Money issues.
