Every nation has had its share of history that the people are not proud of. Slavery was abolished over 100 years ago. At the time of the trade it was very profitable for the traders and for plantation owners. The American Civil War was partially caused by slavery, as the war ended slavery was abolished by the United States Congress on December 6, 1865. In “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” Augustine St. Clare believed that slavery is worse for the master because it had a negative impact on them. There were some slave owners that actually took care of their slaves but the human factor played in their minds. For the money and profits the master were pro slavery but for the inhumane treatment some were not too comfortable with it. There was a concept of the slaves being better off with the masters, this concept was made after slavery was abolished. After the passing of the 13
th
Amendment the Emancipation Proclamation came about which allowed slaves to be paid for their work. Many believed the slaves should have stayed with the master because most of them were uneducated, didn’t know what to do with money, starting a life would have been difficult. Some former slaves stayed on plantations and worked in exchange for food and clothes.

From the book “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” Harriet Jacobs described life of a slave girl that dealt with real life issues. Linda Brent faced issues concerning her children and being sold off to other slave owners. Children that were born into faced the possibility of being sold off because it was profitable and they belong to the masters. As Linda Brent gained freedom she faced the unknown of being in the world with her children. The women in the North did not understand the brutality for women in the South especially slaves, women in the South constantly faced sexual abuse. Girls were forced to commit sexual acts and becoming pregnant as a result of the abuse. The physical abuse was sometimes unbearable for Dr. Flint “When Dr. Flint learned that I was again to be a mother, he was exasperated beyond measure. He rushed from the house, and returned with a pair of shears. I had a fine head of hair; and he often railed about my pride of arranging it nicely. He cut every hair close to my head, storming and swearing all the time. I replied to some of his abuse, and he struck me. Some months before, he had pitched me down stairs in a fit of passion; and the injury I received was so serious that I was unable to turn myself in bed for many days. He then said, "Linda, I swear by God I will never raise my hand against you again;" but I knew that he would forget his promise.” Linda and the rest of the slave girls showed strength in order to survive.

Every nation has had its share of history that the people are not proud of. Slavery was abolished over 100 years ago. At the time of the trade it was very profitable for the traders and for plantation owners. The American Civil War was partially caused by slavery, as the war ended slavery was abolished by the United States Congress on December 6, 1865. In “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” Augustine St. Clare believed that slavery is worse for the master because it had a negative impact on them. There were some slave owners that actually took care of their slaves but the human factor played in their minds. For the money and profits the master were pro slavery but for the inhumane treatment some were not too comfortable with it. There was a concept of the slaves being better off with the masters, this concept was made after slavery was abolished. After the passing of the 13

Amendment the Emancipation Proclamation came about which allowed slaves to be paid for their work. Many believed the slaves should have stayed with the master because most of them were uneducated, didn’t know what to do with money, starting a life would have been difficult. Some former slaves stayed on plantations and worked in exchange for food and clothes.

Linda Brent faced issues concerning her children and being sold off to other slave owners. Children that were born into faced the possibility of being sold off because it was profitable and they belong to the masters. As Linda Brent gained freedom she faced the unknown of being in the world with her children. The women in the North did not understand the brutality for women in the South especially slaves, women in the South constantly faced sexual abuse. Girls were forced to commit sexual acts and becoming pregnant as a result of the abuse. The physical abuse was sometimes unbearable for Dr. Flint “When Dr. Flint learned that I was again to be a mother, he was exasperated beyond measure. He rushed from the house, and returned with a pair of shears. I had a fine head of hair; and he often railed about my pride of arranging it nicely. He cut every hair close to my head, storming and swearing all the time. I replied to some of his abuse, and he struck me. Some months before, he had pitched me down stairs in a fit of passion; and the injury I received was so serious that I was unable to turn myself in bed for many days. He then said, "Linda, I swear by God I will never raise my hand against you again;" but I knew that he would forget his promise.” Linda and the rest of the slave girls showed strength in order to survive.

Explore Virgil’s use of Homer
. To think about this, you would begin by identifying several ways in which Virgil uses Homer, from large-scale features like the comparison of Aeneas to Odysseus to small-scale features like the many references to incidents in Homer or to the words of Homer. We will have discussed some of these things in class, and you should be able to find others. Once you have identified several ways in which Virgil used Homer, think about why Virgil used his predecessor poet in those ways. Was it just because Greek literature had such prestige in Virgil’s Rome, or does it go beyond that? For example, are readers invited to compare Aeneas to one or more of Homer’s heroes and, through the comparison, see certain aspects of Aeneas’s character more clearly? Are readers invited to compare Virgil’s style to Homer’s and, through the comparison, understand more clearly what Virgil is trying to do?
Consider the role of the poet/narrator in Homer and Virgil
. We have talked about the beginnings of the poems, and the different ways the poets announce their projects and invoke their muses. You may certainly use those discussions, but to write on this topic you will need to get beyond them. Other than at the beginnings, do Homer and Virgil narrate differently? Do their narrators dramatize their own roles to the same degree? Do their narrators comment on the action of the plot to the same degree?

What meanings does The Aeneid have beside the obvious story about the founding of Rome by Aeneas? How does Virgil create these other meanings?
Optionally, you may also consider whether the
Aeneid
is different from Homer's works in this respect. The argument is sometimes made that Homer's works are "all surface," that they do not create multiple and complex layers of meaning. Do you agree with this? If so, explore how Homer and Virgil are different.
Consider questions of visual narrative
and the relationships between verbal and visual narratives of the same story. Specifically, examine the set of
Aeneid
images linked below, and consider these questions. Can the images tell a story independently? How much knowledge of Virgil’s text, or how much knowledge of the story of Aeneas is necessary for making sense of the images? Do the creators of the image seem to have relied heavily on detailed reading of Virgil’s text in creating the images? Do the images seem to develop particular themes or ideas, and if so, are these themes or ideas the same ones that are developed in Virgil, or different ones? (See
Notes on the Terminology of Manuscript Study
for some important terms.)

Compare and contrast control over immoveable property in land and the accumulation of material wealth with control over persons and redistribution as two forms of surplus appropriation, and indicate what may be the developmental constraints and implications for each of these two forms of surplus appropriation.
2) Compare and contrast bigmanship and chiefship in terms of their role in economic exchanges, flexibility of political organization, and effectiveness of social integration and control resulting from their respective economic and political positions.
Use specific ethnographic examples from the assigned readings (you may use Mauss as well as Sahlins and Goody on this question).
3) Describe and discuss the jajmani system in relation to any two of the following: (1) the domestic mode of production, (2) the slave mode of production, (3) the Asiatic mode of production, and (4) the capitalist mode of production.
4) Critically assess how Marx views the role of such entities as capital, rent, interest, profit, wages, in the operation of the capitalist mode of production, and discuss the applicability of these categories to the lineage/domestic mode of production, especialy as discussed by Sahlins and Meillassoux,
(albeit in different way),. and the Asiatic mode of production (as in the jajmani system).
5) Terry Eagleton suggests that while there is a relationship between ideology and hegemony, this is not an isomorphic one.
How does Eagleton’s analysis of ideology fit with Raymond Williams’ discussion of hegemony?
(If you are familiar with Bourdieu’s analysis of doxa, orthodoxy and heterodoxy in “Outline of a Theory of Practice” you may bring this into your discussion.)
6) David Harvey talks about “modern” and “postmodern” and the transition between these as a process.
How does the postmodern differ from the modern in his analysis?
(There are a number of ways to think about this)
