What is an Adverb fuction?
1. Regular adverbs: Formed by adding -ly to the end of an
adjective.
Adjective Adverb
slow slowly
careful carefully
beautiful beautifully
2. Words ending in -y: When the adjective ends in -y,
cancel -y and add -ily.
Adjective Adverb
happy happily
angry
crazy
noisy
3. Words ending in -le: When the adjective ends in -le
cancel -e and add -y
Adjective Adverb
gentle gently
terrible
horrible
simple
4. Words ending in -e: When the adjective ends in -e, just
add -ly.

polite politly
brave
definite
5. Words ending in -ic: When the adjective ends in -ic,
just add -ally
Adjective Adverb
enthusiastic
tragic tragically
fantastic
Practice One: Read carefully, identify and circle the adverb of
manner (number of adverbs varies in each sentence)
1. Danny failed his driving test horribly yesterday. How Did Danny
fail his driving test? Horribly
2. Please do this worksheet carefully and neatly.
3. She simply loves eating in this restaurant.
4. The children bravely swam across the river.
5. She is a lovely girl who definitely knows how to draw.
6. It is not easy to do it, but they have easily done it.
7. The students are busily writing notes in the classroom.
8. Tina waited patiently for her friends to arrive.
9. They smiled happily after the class had ended.
10. Sarah cheered for her friends enthusiastically.
Practice Two: Read carefully and fill in the blanks with the
correct adverb.
1. He was angry. He slammed the door ________(angry).
2. She has a gentle voice. She sings the lullaby ________(gentle).
3. He is a fast eater. He _______(quick) finishes the whole cake.
4. She is terrible at the piano. She plays the piano _______ (terrible).
5. Eric is a lazy boy. Eric is doing his homework ________ (lazy).
6. It was a beautiful dance. Lily danced ________ (beautiful).
7. It is a sad and tragic lost. The man ________ (tragic) lost his boat
in the sea.
8. She is sad. She________ (sad) walks back to her house.
9. He was scared and nervous. He was speaking ________ (nervous)
in front of the class.
10. The monkey is hungry. It is eating the banana ________
(hungry).
11. The sun is bright. It’s shining ________ (bright).
12. The boys are loud. They are speaking ________ (loud).
13. She did a fantastic work. She did the work ________ (fantastic).
Practice Three: Read carefully and circle the correct adverb. (use
logic)
1. She rides her bicycle to school (carefully/politely/beautifully).
2. Tina was speaking (politely/terribly/lazily) to her mother.
3. The boy did his homework (poorly/politely/bravely).
4. The man is walking (quietly/loudly/fantastically) because the
baby is sleeping.
5. The student (sadly/excitedly/enthusiastically) looked at the
question because he didn’t know how to answer it.
