This summary provides an overview of key points from the document:
1) Adoption touches many Jewish lives, including adoptive parents, adopted persons, and birth parents, and can have both positive and negative impacts. While adoption is often promoted as building families, adopted persons may struggle with feelings of rejection and missing identity. Birth parents also often experience lifelong trauma from relinquishing their children.
2) Current adoption practices and regulations have left marks on many, as seen in the stories of David, Carol, Barry and others who struggle with questions of identity and genetics. Adoption may not solve infertility as intended and does not guarantee happiness for all parties involved.
3) Attitudes must change regarding single mothers and infertility
Birth Bond is a book by Gediman and Brown that compiles interviews with 36 birth mothers about their experiences reuniting with the children they surrendered for adoption. The book provides an in-depth look at the wide range of emotions and relationship outcomes that can result from reunions. However, the book is limited by only including reunions that resulted in ongoing relationships, rather than recognizing rejection as a possible outcome. It also does not account for unrequited relationships between some reunited parties. Overall, the book is recommended for adoption professionals and those involved in or considering reunions to better understand the long-term experiences and challenges.
This document summarizes and critiques Joyce Johnson's book "What Lisa Knew" about the Steinberg/Nussbaum trial for the murder of their adopted daughter Lisa. It argues that Johnson fails to adequately address the role of adoption in Lisa's tragic situation and death. While Johnson researches the backgrounds of Joel Steinberg and Hedda Nussbaum, she ignores that without adoption placing Lisa with them, she would not have been abused and killed. The adoption system must be held most culpable for failing to properly screen Steinberg and Nussbaum's suitability to adopt.
This document summarizes the author's feelings of sadness and loneliness spending Passover alone without their family. In three sentences:
The author expresses feeling despair and self-pity being alone for Passover without their family or children, as invitations go unaccepted and holidays are spent alone. They take small comfort in believing those who separated mothers and children will have a place in hell, including lawyers, judges, social workers and others who contributed to the pain of separation or lack of reunification. The author reflects on why this Passover night is different from others by being both a motherless child and childless mother, feeling abandoned repeatedly.

Lethal Secrets: The Shocking Consequences of and Unsolved Problems of Artificial Insemination by Annette Baran and Rueben Pannor
http://mirahriben.blogspot.com
This document summarizes a court case in New Jersey regarding an open adoption agreement. A birth mother placed her child for adoption with a couple she knew, with the agreement that she would be able to visit the child. However, when the adoption was finalized, the couple cut off contact. The birth mother sued to overturn the adoption. The New Jersey Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of the adoptive parents, finding that open adoption agreements are not legally enforceable. The document discusses the issues and complexities surrounding open adoption, including the need for clearer laws and expectations regarding the legal status of such agreements.

Many adoptees search for their birth parents to learn about their genetic and medical history or because they feel it is their right to know their origins. While some oppose opening records due to fears it could hurt adoptive families, research shows that parental bonds are not weakened and contact often brings families closer. Though birth parents were often promised anonymity, most now support open records. Proposed legislation in New Jersey would allow adult adoptees access to their original birth records.
This document discusses dealing with death, particularly the death of surrendered children for birth mothers. It shares several birth mothers' experiences finding that the children they surrendered had died, including from accidents, suicide, and murder. It discusses the grief and questions of "why me?" that arise. Seeking help from support groups and therapy can help with coping. While anger is valid, dwelling on it does not help. Maintaining spiritual beliefs helps avoid feelings of low self-worth. The death of a surrendered child means lost chances to reconnect, but also freedom from worries about potential rejection. Overall the document expresses that loss and difficulty make people stronger through coping with adversity.
This document discusses adoption as a women's issue. It argues that pregnancy and childbirth are uniquely experiences for women that can profoundly impact their lives. For single mothers, adoption is often presented as one of the only options, but it should not be viewed simply as a solution for infertile couples, as it begins with the tragedy of separating a mother from her child. The document calls for supporting families and preventing the exploitation of women as "brood stock" through pressuring single mothers to surrender their children for adoption.
This document discusses birth mothers who have placed their children for adoption. It argues that birth mothers have a natural curiosity about their children and a desire to know that they are well. Laws were created to protect anonymity, but this assumes birth mothers don't want contact after relinquishment. The document shares stories of four birth mothers who found their children on their own by following their maternal instincts. Their decisions proved correct, with positive outcomes, suggesting instincts should not be ignored. It advocates relaxing laws to allow contact that benefits both adoptees and birth mothers in learning about their origins and reassuring welfare.
The document discusses defining ethics in domestic and global adoption practices. It outlines some key principles of ethical adoption such as ensuring the best interests of the child, avoiding coercion of biological parents, maintaining transparency around fees and costs, eliminating conflicts of interest, and providing impartial counseling to all parties. The document also notes there is a lack of cohesive understanding and enforcement of ethical standards in the adoption field.
'Open Records' versus 'Equal Access': ReFraming Our IssuesMirah Riben
The document discusses reframing issues related to adoption records and access. It argues that framing an issue shapes public perception and debate. Currently, terms like "open records" and "sealed records" are used, but these frames have downsides. The document advocates reframing the issue as one of "equal access," arguing this frame focuses on principles of equality and human rights. It also suggests not limiting access to adult adoptees, as other citizens have access to their original birth certificates at younger ages. Overall, the document provides strategies for advocacy groups to reframe their messaging around adoption records and access.
Universality of the Grief Experienced by Mothers Who Lose Children to AdoptionMirah Riben
This document summarizes a presentation about the universality of grief experienced by mothers who lose children to adoption. Some key points:
1) Mothers can experience a variety of losses including miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, custody losses, and adoption. Adoption loss is considered "irresolvable" and "disenfranchised" as it lacks rituals and social validation.
2) Studies have found adoption causes high rates of pathological grief, PTSD, depression, and other mental health issues among birth mothers that often do not diminish over time.
3) Despite the depth of loss, adoption is uniquely encouraged and promoted through financial incentives, unlike other forms of child loss.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
