2. • The term, “adolescence” is applied to the age group , usually between 10 and 19
years.
• The Greek word, adolescere denotes "to grow and to mature”
• “rapid growth” not just physical and biological (sexual) but also emotional, cognitive,
psychological, and social.
• Adolescents comprise around 21.4% of the total population which
means every fifth person in India is an adolescent.
• There are 243 million adolescents comprising nearly one-fifth ofthe total
population.
• India has the largest adolescent population in the world.
• On the basis of different needs, adolescence has been divided into two
phases: (1) "early" (10-14 years) and (2) "late" (15-19 years).
3. BURDEN OF HEALTH PROBLEM
• Estimated over 3,000 per day, i.e., 1.2 million adolescents died in
2015, mostly from preventable or treatable causes.
• Road traffic injuries were the leading cause of death in 2015.
• Other major causes of adolescent deaths include lower respiratory
infections, suicide, diarrheal diseases, and drowning.
• Globally, there are 44 births per 1,000 girls aged 15-19 per year.
• Half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start by age 14, but
most cases are undetected and untreated.
