What is drug abuse? Drug abuse is the act of taking illegal or addictive drugs to give yourself a certain feeling. The drugs can be swallowed, injected, snorted, smoked or inhaled.

What are the most common drugs and substances do people abuse? Nicotine: Found in cigarettes, cigars and others. Smoked, snorted or chewed. Alcohol: Found in beer, wine, vodka and many others. It is drunk. Marijuana: Smoked or eaten. Heroin: Smoked, injected or snorted. Cocaine: Smoked, snorted or injected. Methamphetamine: Swallowed, snorted, smoked or injected. Ecstasy: Swallowed, snorted or injected. LSD: Swallowed, or absorbed through mouth tissues. Anabolic Steroids: Injected, swallowed or applied to skin.
Who is an abuser? An abuser is a person who takes an illegal drug, or overuses a prescription drug to get high, or similar effects. An example would be a person who gets drunk every night, smokes weed, or even takes to much of a painkiller.

When is the most common age for drug abuse to start? The most common age for people to start using drugs is their teenage years. They don’t become abusers right away,
How can these people get help? There are many programs and help centres these people can go to. For alcoholics, there is alcoholics anonymous. For drug addicts, there is a great variety of rehabilitation hospitals that they can go too. Recently, a place in Vancouver that lets heroin addicts shoot up under supervision has had to fight to keep their doors open. Not only do they let them shoot up there, but they also provide them with sterile equipment, making the amount of people being infected from dirty, used needles go down. They also provide help if the people would like to quit.
What is the Church’s position on drug abuse? The Church teaches us that life is a precious gift from God, and everything possible must be done to protect it. It also teaches us that we must respect our bodies, and treat them with care. This means that drugs and substances are against what the Catholic Church teaches, because they cause harm to our bodies and can even kill us.
