Los componentes fundamentales de la materia viva son por un lado, inorgánicos dentro de los cuales se incluyen el agua y las sales minerales que serán el objeto de estudio de este tema, junto con los otros componentes que son, orgánicos, si bien dentro de estos abordaremos el tratamiento de los glúcidos y de los lípidos y estudio de las proteínas y de los ácidos nucléico. Para comprender la las bases de la vida, necesitamos saber cómo actúan los todos y cada uno de estos distintos elementos y compuestos del cuerpo, determinando las características que ellos regulan y como forman réplicas de sí mismos para permitir la transmisión durante un número indefinido de generaciones de organismos, este conocimiento debe basarse en primer lugar, en el conocimiento de sus bases químicas y físicas. En la naturaleza de los organismos superiores se encuentra dos tipos de compuestos químicos que son los ácidos nucleicos y proteínas (histonas y/o portaminas) pero puesto que ambos están presentes en el citoplasma lo mismo que en el núcleo, no podemos identificar la sustancia génica localizando simplemente el complejo material químico. Sin embargo datos experimentales establecen ya de manera definitiva la identidad del material hereditario como los ácidos nucleicos, En líneas generales el estudio de estas bases implica el conocimiento de la composición, estructura y propiedades químicas de los ácidos nucleicos, así como las características especiales que debe tener un cuerpo definitivamente constituido para su eventual y rígido y sobre todo buen funcionamiento tanto físico como mental La química se define como el área del conocimiento como el área del conocimiento que estudia la composición de las sustancias, cambios y transformaciones que sufren estas.
