It is with sincere enthusiasm that I recommend Will Widick for a position as Prop Shop
Supervisor at any high-caliber university, college or professional theatre. For context, I write as
a theatre professor at UCSD with 27 years on the faculty and 10 years as provost (head) of one of
our six undergraduate colleges. I have been a member of AEA for 35 years and have served as
PSM in a range of venues, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, national tour, LORT (including
nine productions at La Jolla Playhouse), summer stock, and television. I have directed many
student productions at UCSD and am the author of books on theatrical process.
I have worked with Will on several productions as both PSM and director since he arrived at
UCSD in 2003 and have observed his work as faculty supervisor on many others (I served for
seven years as producing director of the department’s production arm and vice chair of the
department). To distil this to its essence, I would trust Will Widick with the most complex and
challenging position of supervision imaginable in a production/shop environment. Will is a
consummate artist—his work displays extraordinary attention to detail and he is a marvel of skill
and professionalism—and is keenly aware of the demands of theatrical process, whether in the
professional or educational arenas. He is precise, hardworking, and energetic; he possesses
boundless good nature and consistently models the highest work ethic. He has mentored many
students and works patiently with them as they develop their design and directorial concepts.
Will cares deeply about educating both undergraduates and graduate students and views his role
in the shop as an opportunity to teach and nurture. I have learned many lessons myself—as both
director and PSM—from Will’s advice and insightful comments.
While I cannot comment directly on Will’s managerial skills (as I have not observed him in that
capacity), I have every reason to believe that his grace, good humor, intelligence, and deep
concern will serve him in excellent stead for this next level of responsibility.
Sincerely,
Steven Adler
