3. Addison's disease (also known as primary adrenal insufficiency or
hypoadrenalism) is a rare disorder of the adrenal glands. It affects the
production of two hormones - cortisol and aldosterone.
Cortisol is released in stressful situations and helps to maintain your
energy levels, your blood sugar levels and carbohydrate metabolism.
Aldosterone maintains the balance of salt and water in your body, which
helps to control blood pressure.
Introduction
4.
5.
6. Addison’s disease is an autoimmune inflammation of
adrenal glands, resulting in their gradual destruction
and inability to make sufficient amounts of adrenal
hormones.
Life threatening emergency.
No Cortisol & Aldosterone.
Addison's can afflict persons of any age, gender, or
ethnicity, but it typically presents in adults between 30
and 50 years of age
7. SST
– 250mcg synacthen test
– 1mcg synacthen test
ITT
– More laborious and potentially dangerous
– Gold standard
8. TUBERCULOSIS-
It was a leading cause of addison’s disease until the
antibiotics were introduced that successfully treated T.B.
Autoimmune disorders-Here the body’s immune system
makes antibiotics which cells of the adrenal cortex and
slowly destroys them.
Adrenocortical destruction-
Bilateral adrenocortical destruction after T.B or
fungal infection and an idiopathic atrophy are the most
frequent causes .
9.
10. Extreme fatigue
Weight loss and decreased appetite
Darkening of your skin (hyperpigmentation)
Low blood pressure, even fainting
Salt craving
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
Nausea, diarrhea or vomiting (gastrointestinal symptoms)
Abdominal pain
Muscle or joint pains
Irritability
Depression or other behavioral symptoms
Body hair loss or sexual dysfunction in women
SYMPTOMS
11. • darkening of gums due to increased pigment
as seen in Addison's disease
12. • Darkening of the skin seen on the
legs of a white person with
Addison's disease
13. CAUSES
•In an autoimmune disease, your body’s immune system
mistakes any organ or area of the body for a virus,
bacteria, or another outside invader.
• Other causes of primary adrenal insufficiency include:
• prolonged administration of glucocorticoids (e.g.
prednisone)
• infections in your body
• cancer and abnormal growths (tumors)
• certain blood thinners used to control clotting in the
blood
14. There are also many other causes of secondary
adrenal insufficiency, including:
tumors
medications
genetics
traumatic brain injury
15. • Hydrocortisone pills to replace cortisol.
• If patient also lacking aldosterone, fludrocortisones
acetate pills will be provided.
• If patient are taking fludrocortisones, need to increase
salt intake, especially in hot and humid weather and after
exercise.
• In emergencies and during surgery, the medicine is
given intravenously (directly into a vein).
It is done by adequate corticosteroid maintenance
therapy provided by an average daily dose of 25-40 mg
cortisone.
