Greek presentation of standardisation work underway at the Centre of Technical Culture - Industrial Museum Ermoupolis (http://www.ketepo.gr) following the development of the institution's digital collection and its contribution to Europeana.
7th I.S.L.E. Meeting: Sustainability of mass tourismISLE Network
The document discusses the sustainability of mass tourism versus alternative tourism. It argues that the goal of tourism policy should not be to eliminate mass tourism but to make it more sustainable. Mass tourism provides economic benefits from economies of scale but can threaten local environments and cultures if not properly managed. Alternative tourism has more environmental benefits but on a smaller economic scale. The document advocates for a synthesis of mass and alternative tourism, and outlines macro and micro techniques for sustainable management of visitor flows like zoning, limiting numbers, and educating tourists.
Cultural content, cultural repositories and the changing role of learning thr...MEDEA Awards
Eirini Sifaki presented this presentation during the scientific meeting 'Using media to support learning from pre-school through to University' on 31 May 2013 in Greece.
In recent years, the educational role of Museums has turned out to be (emerged) as one of the main directions of their communication strategy, through the diffusion of their cultural inventory to natural or non visitors and school communities. At the same time, developments in information technology and the extension of open access of scientific knowledge has led museums to provide their knowledge and collections online. In this presentation we will sketch some digital repositories emphasizing on the participation of Greek museums. The analysis of the main features and their potential intends to highlight the main prospects and challenges that are opened on the dissemination of knowledge. Finally we will explore the possibilities that exist to support modern educational needs and challenges presented to today's teachers.
- Europeana is a digital library that provides single access to European cultural heritage from over 1500 institutions, containing over 19 million items. It uses open licenses like CC-BY-NC and CC0 to make this content freely available.
- Open licensing benefits users, cultural institutions, and politicians by improving access, visibility, education, and economic growth. However, some institutions fear loss of control, income, reputation, and branding.
- Europeana conducted workshops and consultations on the risks and rewards of open licensing. Based on this, it will transition metadata to CC0 to allow maximum reuse while institutions can still commercially exploit their own metadata. This will enrich data and better connect cultural heritage online.

[EN] This presentation showcases the structure and principles of the cultural hackathon Coding da Vinci, which has been gathering dozens of German cultural institutions (libraries, museums, archives, monument authorities, etc.) into a pool of data exploration and experimentation since 2014. Significant focus is given to data analysis and cleaning as a prerequisite for data use by the creative tech community (programmers, engineers, designers, etc.). Moreover, the use of the Creative Commons licenses is discussed, as it enables the further distribution and manipulation of data according to the needs and goals of the hackathon participants. The presentation concludes by delineating the role of openness in digital strategy development for cultural institutions.
