Acute Otitis Media

Etiologies
• Mostly due to Strep. Pneumonia, H. Influenza,
Moraxella catarrhalis.
Clinical signs
• Otalgia
• Tympanic membrane: Erythema, effusion,
perforation, decrease or absent of TM mobility,
bulging
• Fever
Management
• First line: Amoxicilin 80-90mg/mg q24 (PO) for
10days
• Second line: Amoxicillin-clavulanate, cefdinir,
cefuroxime axetil, and intramuscular ceftriaxone
External Otitis

 Etiology
• Mostly due Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Clinical signs
• The predominant symptom is acute rapid onset of
ear pain (otalgia), often severe, accentuated by
manipulation of the pinna or by pressure on the
tragus and by jaw motion
• Edema of the ear canal, erythema, and thick,
clumpy otorrhea
Management
• Ciprofloxacin ear drop for 5-7days
• Hydrocortisone is consider to added to reduce
inflammation.
