Active immunity provides long lasting resistance and develops when the body produces its own antibodies in response to an antigen, either from natural exposure to a pathogen or from an immunization. Passive immunity only provides short term resistance as it involves the transfer of ready-made antibodies from another individual rather than the body producing its own antibodies. The key difference is that active immunity is produced by the body itself and lasts longer while passive immunity uses antibodies from an external source and only provides temporary protection.
