The document describes a study that synthesized novel thiophene and benzo[b]thiophene derivatives through Diels-Alder reactions. Specifically, 2-vinylthiophene and 2-vinylbenzo[b]thiophene compounds with vinyl groups fused to five-, six-, and seven-membered rings underwent [4+2] cycloadditions with N-phenyl maleimides to form endo-addition adducts in 36-98% yields. The new compounds will be tested for anti-tumor and other biological activities by the National Institutes of Health.
