The kids who are being helped by the No More Victims programs often live in tough
urban environments in families torn apart and in stress. Although there may be
some factors related to delinquent behavior at the individual level, the majority of
delinquency experts believe that the key to understanding delinquent behavior lies in
the social environment. Most delinquents are indigent and desperate, not calculating
or evil. Most grew up in deteriorated parts of town and lack the social support and
economic resources familiar to more affluent members of society. Understanding
delinquent behavior, then, requires analyzing the influence of these destructive social
forces on human behavior.

goal of this book is to take you on a sociological journey. But let’s begin with a basic question:
What is sociology? First of all, sociology is a discipline of and for curious minds! Sociologists
are deeply committed to answering the question, “Why?” Why are some people desperately
poor and others fabulously wealthy? Why does racial segregation in housing and public education
exist, and why does it persist half a century after civil rights laws were enacted? What accounts for
the declining marriage rate among the working class and the poor in the United States? How can we
explain the fact that low-income people are more likely to be overweight or obese than their middle-
class counterparts? Why is the proportion of women entering and completing college rising while the
proportion of men has fallen? Why, in spite of this, do men as a group still earn higher incomes than
women as a group do? And how is it that social media are being simultaneously praised as instruments
of transformational activism and criticized as causes of social alienation and civic disengagement? Take
a moment now to think about some why questions you have about society and social life: As you look
around you, hear the news, and interact with other people, what strikes you as fascinating—but perhaps
difficult to understand? What are you curious about?
Sociology is an academic discipline that takes a scientific approach to answering the kinds of
questions our curious minds imagine. When we say that sociology is scientific, we mean that it is a way
of learning about the world that combines logically constructed theory and systematic observation.
The goal of sociological study and research is to base answers to questions like those above on a
careful examination of the roots of social phenomena such.

Mary Shelley first published Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus 1818. the novel allegorizes the Romantic obsession with discovering the power or principle of life. Ideas about a life power were consistent with the scientific understanding of the day. Darwin himself spoke of an organizing “spirit of animation” in his Zoonomia; or, The Laws of Organic Life, in which he stated “the world itself might have been generated, rather than created.”

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
