This study examined the relationship between spirituality and academic performance in college students. The researchers collected data from 41 college students using surveys on spirituality and academic performance over two weeks. They found a positive correlation between spirituality and academic performance, with females showing a stronger correlation than males. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was 0.524 for females, 0.178 for males, and 0.346 overall, indicating higher levels of spirituality are generally associated with better academic performance.
2. Introduction
and Previous
Studies
Spirituality is a resilient and controversial variable
that has evidenced an ability to help people better
cope with stress. However literature concerning its
relationship with academic performance is narrow
and inconsistent.
Hodge (2007) - In his study of release time in public
schools time where students are allowed to be
absent from classes to attend spiritual instruction
off campus discovered that students participating
in these activities do not gain lower academic
scores for missing their classes. Instead, it seems
that participating in this program enhances their
academic achievement.
3. Research
Method
This thesis benefits from the use of both quantitative
and qualitative research methods.
Data was collected over a two- week period. Some of the
questions asked were:
I experience a connection all life.
I feel deep inner peace or harmony.
For the pleasure I experience when.
I discover new things never seen before.
(Strongly Agree/Strongly Disagree)
4. Participants
and
Instruments
Data was collected from 41 college
students (21 males, 20 females).All
participants were at least 18 years old
with a mean age of 19.5.
This section discusses the instruments
used in order to collect the data.We
administered two surveys, a Spirituality
survey , and the Academic Performance
Survey in order to examine the variables
quantitatively.
5.
6. Procedure
The data was collected in two parts. One
survey for Spirituality and one for
Academic Performance. Ordinal data ( eg.
Strongly disagree,Agree) was collected
through google forms which was put on
various social networking sites and
multimedia platforms.Then with help of
Microsoft excel and PASW software,
Spearman's rank correlation coefficient
was calculated.
10. Result
Spearman's rank correlation coefficient
in case of females was found to be 0.524
and 0.178 for males.
The overall Spearman's rank correlation
coefficient was found to be 0.346 which
shows a positive correlation between the
two.
This is the Bar chart of academic performance survey which shows almost no difference in around 70% of data.
This is the Bar chart of spirituality survey shows women to be more spiritual.why? As women mature, they inevitably question who they are. Their identities are always changing. They are single, then married; childless, then mothers; making choices between caregiving and working outside the home. It appears that men’s roles are more constant, more defined in society from the beginning, and deeply enmeshed in cultural and genetic programming to provide, take care of, produce, and do. Men feel they know why they are. They know what’s expected of them, what they’ll need to do in life to “make it,” and how they must go about it. Because of the fluctuating nature of women’s roles and responsibilities, they are constantly self-monitoring. Their attention is focused inward on their feelings, and the feelings of those around them. All the while, they maintain primary responsibility for the nurturing and education of the next generation.
