This document provides an abstract for a thesis that investigates the notion of work-life balance. The thesis questions the idea that work-life balance is achieved through separating work and personal life into separate spheres. It argues that the increasing pace and flexibility of work makes strict separation difficult for many employees. It uses theories of acceleration, temporality, and taskscapes to analyze how intensive and compressed work schedules can challenge work-life balance. The thesis advocates redefining work-life balance as a balance within one's overall worklife, rather than between separate spheres, in order to address issues of work-related stress.
