Il trattamento di tempra induzione consiste nel provocare il riscaldamento del materiale ferroso immergendo il particolare da riscaldare in un campo elettromagnetico variabile generato da un induttore (es. anello di tubo in rame raffreddato internamente da acqua) percorso da corrente elettrica ad elevata frequenza da 5 Khz a 400 Khz, in base alla profondità di riscaldo che si intende raggiungere.
Le molecole del ferro, eccitate da questo campo elettromagnetico indotto si "autoriscaldano" raggiungendo temperature elevate (1000° C ) in tempi anche molto brevi, nell'ordine di qualche decimo di secondo.
Per definirle grossolanamente, queste correnti induttrici, sono note come di "correnti di Foucault". A seguti del successivo shok termico, determinato dal brusco raffreddamento in vasca d'olio o acqua, gli atomi di carbonio presenti nell'acciaio (precedentemente liberati dall'alta temperatura), rimangono "imprigionati" nel reticolo molecolare del ferro, conferendo alla parte trattata una durezza di gran lunga superiore al precedente stato fisico.
