1. About the Initiator/Lead Facilitator
Bosede Olusola-Obasa is a seasoned journalist, who cut her teeth in journalism in
1997 as a student reporter with now defunct, Today’s Choice Magazine, Oregun,
Lagos State. That was her opportunity to garner field experience while studying
Journalism at the prestigious Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos, Nigeria.
At different times while running this course, she worked at the Lagos State
Ministry of Information, Alive Evening Newspaper and at PUNCH Newspaper in
2000, where she had the mandatory one-year Industrial Attachments as part of
requirement for the award of the NIJ certificate.
Her intention was to go back to school after IT, but her senior colleagues, who
found her to be conscientious at her duty, urged her to take up an employment
opportunity with PUNCH, while running a part-time university programme. The
offer seemed good to her and that started what became a 14-year beautiful
career as a journalist at PUNCH Newspapers ((One of Nigeria’s leading
newspapers between Jan. 10, 2000-March 11, 2014).
Working for PUNCH was actually a dream come true for her as she had always
dreamt of it happening. Bosede’s exposure to various assignment within the
journalism sphere, built her into a one-stop-shop of a blend of competence and
character.
From being a newsroom liaison officer, facilitating seamless communication and
copy flow between the head office and over 30 outstation correspondents across
Nigeria, Bosede transited into being a full-fledge reporter in 2003.
Her life is, no doubt, a proof of how character and resilience can take a person
from one career prospect ladder. Her virtue of hard work saw her through the
Lagos State University, where she bagged a Degree in Public Relations and
Advertising (Second Class Upper Division).
It is noteworthy to mention among other feats that in 2010, Bosede
conceptualized, pioneered and nurtured to maturity, the first electricity consumer
column in Nigeria – Power Talkback, published weekly in Saturday PUNCH.
2. Thanks to her then Editor, Mr. Obafemi Obadare, who invested trust in her
capacity to bring ideas to fruition, as the column, soon became the toast of
advertisers, operators, regulators and consumers of electricity in Nigeria.
Bosede has been exposed to the dignity of labour since her pre-university days so
paving way for her to fit easily into the series of redeployments she got at PUNCH.
A rounded and very bold journalist, she covered and left her marks on beats such
as The Nigerian Capital Market, Special Interviews with Captains of industry,
Heads of Professional Bodies and The Media bigwigs; and writing daunting
Investigative, Human-Interest Features; Developmental Issue-based Features and
Analysis.
It may interest you to know that she also wrote soft stuffs like: Marriage and Sex-
related features, Agony Aunt Page (Pain in my Heart) and so on.
Bosede is well exposed to value-adding professional trainings among which are:
Institute of Financial Planning, (Financial Investment and Planning Strategies
2005); Lagos Business School Pan-African University, (Sly Alakwe Economic and
Business Programme 2006); BBC World Service Trust, (Budget Monitoring Project
2007); The Nigerian Stock Exchange (Opportunities, Threats of New Reporting
Environment 2007); World Editors Forum (New Century Newsroom 2009); CNN
Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Training 2012.
Apart from impact through her writings, her contributions to the media industry
includes being an active member, Coalition for the Freedom of Information Bill
(now an Act); three-time Panelist, IREX Washington DC, Media Sustainability Index
for 2010, 2012 and 2014.
