Henry is a 14-year-old African American boy from an inner city school district who has Type 2 diabetes and a language processing disorder. The school district had classified him as cognitively impaired based on an IQ of 62, but an independent evaluation found he has average intelligence. After negotiations, Henry was placed in a private school for learning disabilities paid for by the district, and now receives transportation, a laptop, uniforms, and lunch, allowing him to thrive and potentially become the first in his family to attend college.

2. Henry is a 14 year old African American child from an inner city school district. His mother is disabled and in ill health and is unable to work. Henry suffers from Type 2 diabetes.

3. The school district evaluated Henry and identified him as a child with a disability under the category of cognitive impairment, with an overall IQ of 62. He was placed in classes with other children with developmental handicaps.

4. Henry’s mother did not believe he was in the right classes, so she came for help to Special Education Services.

5. SES obtained an independent evaluation of Henry, at school district expense, which revealed that Henry has average intelligence, and suffers from a language processing disorder. In other words, Henry had a learning disability, not a cognitive impairment.

6. After several negotiations with the school district, SES had Henry placed in a private school for children with learning disabilities for at least two years at the school district’s expense.

7. Henry also receives transportation to and from his new school, a laptop computer, and a stipend for uniforms.

8. Since Henry qualified for the federal free lunch program while in public school, and the free lunch does not follow the child, SES was able to obtain a donation for Henry’s lunch at his new school.

9. Henry will hopefully be the first member of his family to attend college. He loves his new school, and they love him. For this service, no fee was charged to Henry’s family.
