Art Data Hackathon - Klima iOS app
The Klima iOS app aims to get people into art galleries by providing useful and relatable information. It retrieves weather data through an API and uses the current conditions to suggest local art that features similar weather. The app then displays this art along with the current weather, gallery opening times, and website links. Technically, it uses the OpenWeatherMap API for weather data and the Nasjonal Museet API to execute queries to find matching art based on the weather conditions.
Building GitLab
GitLab has grown from 5 employees in 2014 to over 262 employees today while being fully remote. They have no offices and everything is open source, including their business processes and policies. Being fully remote and open source allows GitLab to hire the best talent worldwide, have over 1,900 contributors, and get work done through asynchronous work, requiring everyone to contribute, offering unlimited vacation, and spending time bonding as a team.
Sprint 95
Sprint 95 focused on enhancements to the user interface, providers, automation, platform, REST API, and documentation. Key improvements included allowing physical chassis nesting in the UI, adding sysprep support for oVirt, merging over 300 pull requests across ManageIQ repositories, and updating installation and configuration guides. The next sprint review is scheduled for October 10th.
Go reactive - Manuel Vicente Vivo
Reactive programming is a programming paradigm based on propagating changes and processing data flows. It uses observables to emit items and subscribers to consume those items. Some key aspects are functional reactive programming using lambdas and closures, composing flows in a push-based and asynchronous manner using events. There are reactive extensions for many languages that allow composing asynchronous and event-based programs using observable sequences. RxJava is a library for composing asynchronous and event-based programs for the Java VM using observable sequences. It has common components like observables that emit items, subscribers that consume items, and operators to transform, filter, combine and aggregate observable sequences.

OTP20 officially introduced dirty schedulers. In this talk, we'll cover why they're part of OTP and what function they perform. Using Rust NIFs, we'll compare schedulers and dirty schedulers to illustrate the trade-offs between scheduler types. By the talk's end, it should be apparent why dirty schedulers are part of OTP and how and when you should consider using them.
1Spatial: Cardiff FME World Tour: Live vessel tracking - FME Cloud
FME Cloud was used to build a solution to ingest live shipping data from an API into an ArcGIS Online map for a client within a week. An FME workspace was created to retrieve vessel positions from the MarineTraffic API every 2 minutes and write them to truncate and update an ArcGIS Online feature service. It also archived positions to a Google Fusion Table. FME Cloud monitoring and notifications ensured the solution ran continuously and issues were detected. The solution met all requirements including being live by Friday without requiring on-premise hardware or ongoing costs beyond the initial subscription period.

Lightning talk about an old tool for deploy automation: Capistrano. Automation tools are fashion nowadays, however Capistrano is part of those old and mature tools that are very good in certain contexts. If you have to upload your code source to remote server in order to deploy your application, Capistrano can be a good fit. It is also easy to extends to support complex workflows.

Lee Briggs is a principle infrastructure engineer at Apptio who has been using Kubernetes since 2015. He discusses the need for configuration management of Kubernetes clusters and components. Existing tools like Helm, Ansible, and Terraform have downsides for configuration management. Briggs developed kr8, an open source tool written in Go that uses Jsonnet to render configuration templates and apply them to multiple Kubernetes clusters in a flexible way.

This involved building new Debian packages, porting configurations, updating dialplans, testing features, and addressing issues like crashes, logging problems, and high system loads. Through testing and troubleshooting, the upgrade was eventually successful and the system could handle the same call load as the previous version. However, ongoing work is still needed to optimize logging and reduce continuous CPU loads.
