Geothermal heat pump systems, also known as geoexchange systems, are the most energy efficient and cost-effective space conditioning systems available according to the EPA. They have been used for over 50 years in the U.S. and hundreds of thousands of systems have been installed. Geoexchange systems use the earth as a heat source and sink by transferring heat between the ground and a building through a series of pipes buried underground, eliminating the need for natural gas and reducing electricity costs by up to 50%. While initial installation costs can be higher due to excavation needs, the systems last over 50 years and save significantly on operating costs over traditional HVAC systems.
