The gap between the management and success of elite middle and long distance ...Lewis Kanyiba
Abstract
Introduction: Kenya has been very successful at middle and long distance races in international competitions for the last five decades. However, Kenyan world record beaters have denounced the motherland flag by switching nationality, sought training in alien bases under foreign managers, been living under deplorable conditions after athletic career, or they have been the victim of neglect-induced death at a prime career age. There is extensive research available on the success of Kenyan athletes, but no study to the knowledge of the researchers has linked the management of Kenyan athletes to that success.
Design: As a foundation for further research, the current exploratory study was designed to determine whether elite athletes, their coaches, and administrative officials (Athletics Kenya [AK] officials) differed on the effectiveness of the sampled managerial practices (personnel, equipment/facilities, motivation, patriotism, team selection, and training programs) in facilitating the success of Kenyan elite runners. The study further details the effect of nationality change and the role of foreign managers towards the success of Kenyans in distance running.
Methods: The study took place in Nairobi, Kenya. The sample comprised 185 elite athletes, 49 coaches, and 34 AK officials. The Chi-square (χ2) test for independence (α = .05.) analysis was used to determine a consistent and predictable relationship between the variables.
Results: The pairwise comparisons showed that athletes differed significantly with coaches and AK officials on the sampled managerial practices while coaches did not differ significantly with AK officials. Suggestions for further research are given.
Sport plays a central role in Australian popular culture and is seen as an important site for constructing national identity. Cricket has had a particularly strong influence as the first team sport in Australia and its deep connection to Britain. Sporting successes are celebrated as national achievements while failures are felt as national disappointments. The Olympics also hold significant cultural importance for Australia. While sport is revered, questions remain around its role in Australian society and myths of natural sporting ability.
Cricket originated in England in the 12th century as a crude game and gradually developed over centuries with early forms including creag in 1300 and creaget. The modern game continued to develop in the 17th-18th centuries with first official rules in 1744 and the first cricket club forming in 1787. The international game began in the late 19th century between England, Australia, and South Africa. Governing bodies were formed to administer the international and domestic games. One-day cricket and Twenty20 cricket were later developed in the 1960s-2000s to make the game more spectator-friendly and commercially viable.
Strength & Conditioning Training for NetballJon Renes
This document discusses strength and conditioning training for netball. It outlines the five "S's" of sport that should be trained: skill, speed, suppleness, strength, and stamina. Benchmarking tests are recommended to establish baselines and set performance goals. A high performance training program is described, emphasizing specificity, progressive overload, and periodization over 10,000 hours of training across 10 years.
Circuit training involves completing a series of strength exercises in a circuit without rest between exercises to improve strength, stamina, and flexibility, with the exercises laid out in a circular pattern but sometimes varied; it provides a full-body workout and can be adapted for different fitness levels and goals through variations in exercises, duration, intensity, and rest periods between circuits.

Over 1,200 athletes at Development and Podium levels receive around £100 million annually from the Programme to support their development through their sport's governing body.
This document outlines a new youth sport strategy for England that aims to increase the number of young people who develop sport as a habit for life. Key elements of the strategy include building on the School Games program to promote competitive sport in schools, improving links between schools and community sports clubs by establishing at least 6,000 partnerships by 2017, focusing 60% of national governing bodies' funding on activities for youth, investing over £250 million in community sports facilities and programs, and implementing a payment-by-results system for funding allocations. The goal is to convert interest generated by the 2012 London Olympics into lifelong participation in sport.

The document summarizes the development of sport in pre-industrial Britain and the effects of the industrial revolution on sport. In pre-industrial Britain, sport was limited by short leisure time and based around the church calendar for festivals. The industrial revolution led to longer working hours but also Saturday half-days off and the loss of common land, enabling the development of team sports and standardized rules. The rise of industry also saw the growth of factory and church teams competing against each other.
Here are some potential sports that could fall into each category:
Early Specialization: Gymnastics, figure skating, diving, swimming
Late Specialization: Athletics, team games like soccer/basketball, combat sports like judo/boxing, rowing
UK Sport has created a World Class Performance Programme to help UK athletes realize their potential and win medals at international competitions. The programme has three levels - World Class Talent, World Class Development, and World Class Podium - and provides funding and support to identified athletes through their sport's national governing body. Over 1,200 leading athletes at the Podium and Development levels benefit annually from around £100 million in funding and support through the various stages of their development and pursuit of podium success.
The UK Sport assumed responsibility for Olympic and Paralympic performance support in England in 2006. It established a three-level World Class Programme funded by the lottery to identify, develop, and support talented athletes. The levels include World Class Talent for identifying athletes, World Class Development for sports with medal potential in 6 years, and World Class Podium for sports likely to medal at the next Games. Funding is provided through governing bodies and individual athlete awards.
This document discusses talent identification and development in sports. It explains that talent ID aims to identify potential in young athletes and provide pathways for them to reach their potential. It notes that talent ID looks at both physical and mental attributes. There is variation in talent ID between closed-loop individual sports like swimming versus open-loop team sports like football. Talent ID was highly developed in East Germany and involved screening children at age 7 and funneling identified talents into sports schools. Australia also developed talent ID programs through the Australian Institute of Sport.
The document outlines traditional pathways in sport in the UK, including participation, foundation, competition, and elite performance levels. It discusses how individuals have historically progressed from school to regional teams to elite clubs. It also mentions strategies like PESSCL that aim to bridge gaps between school and club sport. Finally, it provides context on the national framework for sport in England, including its key drivers, settings, and outcomes like increased participation and improved health.
UK Sport, Sport England, and the Youth Sport Trust are the three key agencies that work to develop and organize sport in the UK. UK Sport focuses on elite performance and the Olympics, distributing National Lottery funds. Sport England aims to increase grassroots participation and develop talent. The Youth Sport Trust enhances PE, sport opportunities, and pathways for young athletes through initiatives like TOP Programmes and School Sport Partnerships.

International Study: Netball in Australia
Introduction:
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC), established in 1989, is the government
policy that plays a major role in the development and operation of Australian sport.
It is compromised of six divisions:
- The Australian Institute of Sport
- Sport Performance and Development
- Corporate Services
- Commercial and Facilities
- Finance
The mission of the ASC is ‘to enrich the lives of all Australians through sport’ and the
vision is ‘to continue to be recognised as the world leader in developing high
performance and community sport’. Sport us an ‘integral part of Australian life’ with
80% of the population participating in sport. The sporting ethos includes high levels of
mass participation and involvement but also strongly emphasises the importance of
winning and competitiveness, due to it being a nation that very much prides itself on
sport.
Globally it is accepted as one of the worlds top sporting nations and is ranked in the top
ten in many sports. The county is currently ranked number 1 in the International
Federation Netball Associations Current World Rankings (appendices 1)
The national sports system is a partnership between the
national sporting organisation and their affiliated bodies:
‘Netball Australia’ is the national governing body for netball
within Australia. It was founded in 1927 and has the vision of
‘netball – one team, one game, one goal’. It also has a mission
and a large number of values (appendices 2)
The Aboriginals are the countries indigenous population and a wide variety of religions
are socially accepted in Australia.
The climate varies from state to state due to Australia being of such a large landmass
(approximately 7,600,000km²). Generally the weather is relatively hot and there are
low levels of rainfall.
Grass Roots and Mass participation:
Sport is a large part of schooling and netball is taught in physical education and health
lessons and clubs also allows students to participate together in an interschool
competition or alternatively enter as a team in a local league.

(appendices 5)
There are approximately 380 000 participants in netball within Australia. Community
Sport is extremely large and netball grass root level participation is large with many
leagues available for all ages and abilities.
Netball Australia has set up a ‘junior policy’ which aims to assist the provision of
quality sport and experiences for young people, encouraging life-long involvement. The
Junior Netball policy applies to participants aged 5-17 and has seven main guidelines
(appendices 3).
San Remo NetSetGO! Programme has been developed to provide children from 5-
10years old with the best possible leaning and playing
experience meaning they develop a positive introduction to
netball, with high levels of enjoyment leading to continued
participation in the sport. It involves skill based activities,
minor games and modified matches in a fun and safe
environment aiming to give all individuals experience and
personal achievement, enhanced self esteem, social
cooperation and skill development. (Appendices 4)
The Australian Sports Commission provides funding to Netball Australia to coordinate
the delivery of structured sporting activities and sports capacity to Indigenous
communities across Australia. Netball Australia funds; Netball ACT, Netball Victoria
and Netball WA through the national indigenous sporting development programme.
The right for people with disabilities to be involved in all aspects of the game is funded
by Netball Australia. The individuals involved in netball including, coaches,
administrators, officials and players: a ‘disability action plan’ has been developed to
provide everyone with the access and provision to participate in Netball around
Australia.
The uptake of individuals coaching and umpiring is
also widely encouraged and volunteers often allow
local leagues to be successful with both coaches and
umpires contributing regularly to netball.

Elite Development:
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) plays a major role in the elite development of
Netball in Australia: The 2009 AIS Netball Brochure gives a detailed
summary of the provision for netballers at the AIS.
Netball was one of the eight founding sports of the AIS and remains
the ‘key netball development programme’ providing national athletes
with world-leading sports science and medical services, top class sporting facilities and
coaches and the opportunity to combine sports training with travelling, work and
studying. Scholarships are offered to athletes that compete at national or international
level the training the selected athletes are given is based on the Australian Netball
Diamonds. The athletes
compete in the ‘New Idea Case Study:
Australian Netball League’ a The AIS netball Team recently travelled to South
league which bridges the gap Africa for a 13 day tour to compete in 3 matches
between state and territories against the U21 South African team and in
competitions and the ANZ another 3 matches against the EC Comets
championship. Provincial Team, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan
University Netball Team and the Gauteng
Thunderbirds. Simone McKinnis the AIS head
coach and U21 Australian Coach lead the tour
with four other support staff. The trip was part pf
the programme that goes on an international tour
annually, aiming to let players experince the
rigours of travelling, cultural diversity and the
opportunity to play against world class opposition.
There is the opportunity to represent the Australian Netball
Diamonds at 17/U 19/U 21/U and Open level. This is
obviously the highest level elite level of competition
available. The Australian Netball Diamonds of compete in the commonwealth games
and the International test series in addition to the ‘Holden Netball Test Series’
competing in five matches against the New Zealand Silver Ferns.
The ANZ championship began in 2008, and succeeds two
national leagues: Australia’s Commonwealth Bank Trophy and
New Zealand’s National Bank Cup. There are ten teams in
total, five from Australia and five from New Zealand
(appendices 8). It is owned by Trans-Tasman Netball League
Ltd which is a joint venture between Netball Australia and
Netball New Zealand. It is the first semi-professional netball
competition in Australasia.
Critical Analysis:
Netball in Australia is well supported and funded by ‘Netball Australia’ and the
Australian government through the Australian Sports Commission. At grass root level
the game is played by a large number of people and supported by the extensive network

of umpires and coaches. Netball is currently the top in the world rankings and which
shows the success of their elite development programmes and the involvement of the
Australian Institute of Sport. The ASC is continuously improving the provision for
indigenous communities and the disabled in all areas of the sport. Netball in Australia
consists of both well developed mass participation and that provides for continued
success on an international level.
