led to the early release of murder suspect Evan Ebel.
By Jeremy P. Meyer The Denver Post
colorado springs» Gov. John Hick
enlooper on Thursday announced that
he ordered the Department of Correc
tions to audit thousands of records to en
sure that prisoners are serving appropri
ate sentences.
The order comes two weeks after DOC
executive director Tom Clements was
shot to death at his Monument home.
The chief suspect is parolee Evan Ebel, a
man released from prison about four
years early because of a court’s clerical
error.
“The department will prioritize the re
view of cases with the greatest level of
risk, going back 10 years and reviewing
required consecutive sentencing,” Hick
enlooper said in a news release. “The de
partment will work with the Attorney
General’s office on any issues that may
need further action.”
The DOC announced the audit and a
review of state parole procedures by the
National Institute of Corrections at a
news conference.
DOC officials will first look at the sen
tences of about 255 inmates convicted of
assaulting corrections officers, which re
quires consecutive sentencing. Ebel in

told a police officer that her patient
had confessed homicidal thoughts
and was a danger to the public, ac

The psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fen

The officer, Lynn Whitten, respond

But the documents don’t reveal
what — if anything — campus au

But beneath the optimism of spring,

Gunrights advocates furious over gun bills in the
Colorado legislature have launched recall efforts
against the state Senate president and a rural House
lawmaker, and are talking about going after the gov
ernor and other Democratic politicians.
Yet the state’s most hardball gunrights advocate
isn’t sure a recall is the best strategy.
That dynamic underscores the strong hand Re
publicans believe the new guncontrol laws have
dealt them — but also the peril they face in going
forward with recalls.
Dudley Brown, director of Rocky Mountain Gun
Owners, thinks the time and money would be bet
ter spent taking out Democrats in swing districts
in the 2014 election.
To force an election, recall organizers have to
collect petition signatures based on 25 percent of
