Fire Safety goes to the dogs…

Brendan’s Meadows dog rescue has donated a supply of pet oxygen rescue kits to the Westfield

and Mountainside Fire Departments. Amy Jester, Vice President of Brendan’s Meadows, told

Nj.com that Fire Chiefs Dan Kelly of Westfield and Pete Esemplare (ES-EM-PLARE) of

Mountainside “enthusiastically embraced” the pet rescue program.

Pet oxygen masks are specifically designed to fit the muzzles and snouts of dogs, cats, and other

household pets. The masks offer a continuous flow of healthy oxygen, helping pets to breathe

better in case of emergencies, such as household fires.

For more information on Brendan’s Meadows Rescue or their Pet Rescue Kit program, email

brendansmeadows@yahoo.com and visit brendansmeadows.com.

A Perth Amboy man was arrested in Cranford for drug possession. On February 11, Lawrence

Grey, 50, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia

and possession of prescription medication. This was following a motor-vehicle stop on

Centennial Ave.

At approximately 4:05 pm, Police Officer Brian Lopez stopped a 2000 blue Dodge for a

passenger seatbelt violation. The passenger was Grey, who was allegedly in possession of

marijuana and Percocet.

Grey’s court appearance is scheduled for today.

President Obama made the first State of the Union Address of his second term. "It is our

unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country -- the idea that if you work hard

and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you

look like, or who you love," Obama said Tuesday night. He emphasized economic growth and

job creation, insisting these proposals would not increase the federal deficit. The president urged

legislators to work together for the good of the Nation, putting party interests aside.

National headlines also influenced Obama’s speech. He continued to push for tighter gun laws

opposed by the National Rifle Association as well as legislators from both parties. Former U.S.

Representative Gabrielle Giffords was in the audience, as well as the parents of 15-year-old

Hadiya Pendleton, the Chicago girl killed by gun violence after returning home from taking part

in the inauguration activities in Washington. Obama listed gun violence victims, including

Hadiya’s parents, Giffords, the families of the Newtown schoolchildren and other victims of

mass shootings. He said “they deserve a vote.” The audience cheered loudly.

Police are working to confirm if the human remains found inside of a torched cabin near

Big Bear Lake, California are that of ex-LAPD officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, whose

vendetta against Los Angeles police officers ended in the cabin yesterday with a shootout that

wounded one deputy and left another dead.

After the deputy’s death Tuesday, the total number of people Dorner is accused of killing is now

four. Dorner was first named a suspect in two shooting deaths on February 3: that of his police

union representative’s daughter and her fiancé. Police also say he killed one officer in Riverside,

California, wounding two others.

Dorner vowed in a manifesto posted online to kill police officers as a way to avenge what he

called an unfair termination. Since its posting, the LAPD has provided security and surveillance

details for more than 50 police officers and their families, many whom were named in the

manifesto. Police will continue protecting these people until Dorner is confirmed dead.

America’s next top dog goes to Banana Joe…

The little affenpincher with the shiny black coat and bouncy step that’s affectionately called a

“monkey dog” won “Best in Show” at the Westminster Kennel Club Tuesday night. The win

gave this 5-year-old pup his 86th Best in Show title overall.

A 20-month-old old English sheepdog took runner-up. Also in the final ring were a German

wirehaired pointer, an American foxhound, a Portuguese waterdog, a bichon (BEE-JAAN) frise

(FREESE) and a smooth fox terrior.

This year, in the 137th Westminster, there were 2,721 entries.

The Pope did what?

If you haven’t heard by now, Pope Benedict XVI is stepping down from his position, making

him the first pope to resign in 600 years. While the Pope most likely won’t be sitting on the

beach or playing bingo during his retirement, he will retreat to the papal vacation residence

Castel Gandolfo after his last day as pontiff on February 28, says a Vatican spokesman.

Professor Christopher Bellito of Kean University told abc that the Pope, who is now 85, will

likely spend the final chapter of his life out of the public eye, maybe living with his brother

Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, who is 89.

In his resigning statement, the Pope cited his reasons for stepping down as deteriorating

health as a result of old age, as well as not having the physical and mental strength needed

to do his job.

Bellito calls this an incredibly noble and humble action and says “When [he ] walks away

from it, he really wants to walk away.”

France’s lower house of Parliament approved a bill to legalize gay marriage and allow same-sex

couples to adopt children, giving a major legislative victory to President Francois Hollande’s

Socialists on the social issue. Passed by a 329-229 vote, the measure puts France on track with

about a dozen European nations that allow gay marriage. France joins Britain as the largest

European countries to do so. The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Spain, as well as

Argentina, Canada and South Africa have authorized gay marriage, along with nine U.S. states

and the District of Columbia.

President Hollande made legalizing gay marriage one of his planks on his way to winning the

presidency. Hollande’s popularity however, has fallen and his foes on the political right sense his

vulnerability.

The latest polls suggest a narrow majority of French support gay marriage, but that has declined

from about two-thirds support in August.
