April 2022 Dominican Starfish Foundation Update
The document summarizes the work and accomplishments of the Dominican Starfish Foundation in April. They installed cabinets and windows in accommodations for humanitarian workers. With donations, they hired an assistant director to help with education programs. They are 80% funded for Dominga's new home and the Pimenter family home is nearing completion. Tiny Stitches is always looking for more volunteers and donations of supplies or money to continue their mission.
Project 1
Samaritan's Purse is a Christian organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to people in need around the world through programs like Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child distributes shoebox gifts filled with toys and supplies to children in 95 countries. Volunteers collect donations and pack over 8 million shoebox gifts each year. The program aims to show children that they are loved and to share the love of God. It provides hope to children experiencing poverty, natural disasters, and other hardships.

Life's Memories & More was established in 2006 by Tanya Bullock and Cheryl Hackenson as a paper craft store in Palmer, MA. Over the years, Tanya has supported many charitable causes through the store, such as fundraising for Baystate Health's Rays of Hope Foundation for breast cancer research. The store also regularly works with other local businesses and organizations on collaborative events and fundraising efforts. Life's Memories & More was recognized for its community involvement by being named the 2013 Business of the Year by the Quaboag Hills Chamber of Commerce.

We started coming to the Dominican Republic in 2006. We originally earned a vacation from a company we worked for. We bought a vacation package and gradually became more and more involved in the community. In 2012 we registered Dominican Starfish Foundation.

Caring Hearts for Kids of Moore is a nonprofit charity started on Facebook in 2013 that aims to help children and families in Moore County, North Carolina get essential items. It has over 3,300 Facebook members and supports local schools and missions. The organization provides items like school supplies, clothing, furniture, and even helps find homes and jobs. It partners with schools and businesses to provide coats, clothes, shoes, and Christmas gifts to children in need. The goal is to unite the community and encourage helping one another through donations, volunteering, or prayer.
Christmas Shoebox Project (Part1) -Dec 2009
Helping Angels ran a Christmas Shoebox Project in December 2009 to provide gifts to underprivileged children in Cape Town and Johannesburg. People were invited to fill a shoebox with small toys, hygiene products, and snacks, then donate the boxes. Over 1800 boxes were collected from schools, companies, and individuals. The boxes were distributed to children's homes, places of safety for abused children, and to farm children in Kraaifontein, bringing joy to the recipients and making a positive difference in their Christmas.

A warmer winter
- 1. A Warmer Winter By Andrea Reed MDI Site HUS 352
- 2. • Many times parents need to face a hard decision: whether to pay their rent or other bills, or purchase their children warm winter apparel. • There are 16,400,000 children in this country that go without the basic necessities. • Winter in Maine can be very harsh and many children do not have access to warm winter apparell.
- 3. Advocacy Statement I will collect warmer winter wear for disadvantaged families and donate them to The Emmaus Homeless Shelter in Ellsworth, Maine. To do this, I will need to contact Nicole Gulowsen, the life manager at The Emmaus Homeless Shelter. I will put up ads that reflect the need for such a project and ask for community involvement. When I receive donated items, they will be washed before they are presented.
- 4. Collecting I began my project with talking to Nicole Gulowsen at the Emmaus Homeless Shelter. She was more than happy to accept anything that I could produce from our community. The Emmaus Homeless Shelter has a clothing room, in which the public can come in and select items of needed clothing for free.
- 5. • The Emmaus Shelter opened its doors to its first guests on February 25, 1992. • The average number of shelter guests each year for the past 20 years has been an astonishing 350. • Emmaus offers referrals, assistance with fuel and electric payments, holiday baskets, Christmas gifts, fresh produce, clothing, school supplies and boxes of food 20,500 times per month
- 6. I chose to donate to the Emmaus Homeless Shelter because in the Spring of 2011, I completed my practicum with them. They were very generous and my heart grew very fond of the people (staff and residents) there. I was able to see life in a different perspective and knew that I would always want to be there to help if I was able to.
- 7. The Emmaus Homeless Shelter Ellsworth, Maine The Emmaus Homeless Shelter is a 22 bed facility which can accommodate four families, six single women, and five single men, ages 18 and up. The Shelter operates (24) twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year.
- 8. The Clothing Room One way to help the homeless and those struggling in our society is to donate used or new clothing to the shelter.
- 9. Facebook I then published an event on Facebook called A Warmer Winter, in which I invited people to donate gently used or new jackets, snow pants, hats, mittens/gloves, and boots.
- 10. Facebook I placed ads in barter, swap, and sell pages on Facebook asking the public to donate and informing that the items were to be donated to the Emmaus Homeless Shelter.
- 11. Flyer NEEDED: Gently used or new winter jackets, snow pants, boots, hats, and mittens/gloves to be donated to the Emmaus Homeless Shelter in Ellsworth for disadvantaged families. - 17. I dropped off the donated items. They were very grateful for the donation and said that the items would be gone in no time.
- 18. What I learned I learned that it feels very good to bring something together to help others. I also learned that through these difficult times, there are many who are willing to give to others, but just can’t due to financial strain. I did not receive an abundance of donations, but I feel good about what I was able to produce, because in these times, every little bit helps.
