- The Alcott Place Controversy and The Misrepresentations of the Enterprise Foundation: “ The elderly residents of Alcott Place have a special relationship with the neighborhood kids, who know that Alcott's door is always open if they need help with their homework, an extra pair of winter mittens, or just a sympathetic ear. Concerned and active members of the local community, Alcott's residents regularly collect small items of clothing and school supplies for the children, host picnics, and take part in drug and crime watches." WHY “ Growing old often means growing poorer and more vulnerable. Finding safe, affordable, and decent housing is particularly difficult for the elderly.“ WHAT “ Formerly the Louisa May Alcott Elementary School, this historic building in Baltimore City’s Lower Park Heights community was converted in 1990 to 44 quality, affordable apartments. Using Historic Tax Credits as well as Low Income Housing Tax Credits, the classrooms of this local landmark were converted into one-bedroom, one bath dwellings. The school’s original main entrance opened to a hallway that is now a large, bright community room for residents.” “ In addition, the wide hardwood hallways are now used as activity boards for the residents. After standing vacant for 20 years, Alcott Place now provides safe, comfortable, well-maintained homes. - November 2003-This multifamily dwelling had no mechanical exhaust and ventilation system for its stairwells, hallways, and common areas. The exhaust fan for clothes dryers in the building’s laundry room was the only exhaust fan in this historic building.
