Seeing Story Everywhere/Story craft in technical writingElisa Sawyer
Do classes in creative writing improve our skills in technical fields? The presenter says yes! Even for writing reference material, story craft as taught in creative writing provides a set of skills that some highly technical of audiences can recognize as uniquely valuable. Learn what is taught in master classes on story and how the skills we can learn when we take these types of classes can improve what we offer our users as technical writers.
Time and again, the same kind of story arc emerges, in differing cultures and at different times. Recognized and described by Joseph Campbell and also by countless writers who write about writing, it is often called "The Hero's Journey." Some writers think that the human brain is hard-wired to respond to the story arc. A good understanding of story craft can help us organize complex and voluminous information in ways that increase usability and accessibility.
Story craft involves building character, creating drama, and creating an arc that draws an audience along a journey, usually with a protagonist. Though not always obvious, all of the elements of story exist in technical communication. The presenter will involve the audience in discovering how an understanding of story craft and techniques taught in creative writing master classes can improve our technical writing.

Writing The Story--or--Confronting the GrueElisa Sawyer
When we as writers see a blank white page, sometimes our minds go pitch black, and we're in danger of being "eaten by a grue." What's a grue, anyway? That being that lurks in the darkness and consumes us could be anything, really. By allowing ourselves to dance in the world of metaphor, we can begin to find our way in unfamiliar territory and tell a story that is relevant to the current situation, draws upon common understanding, and enlightens people with new perspectives at the same time. This is as valuable in technical writing as it is in fiction and screen writing.
Learning to think in symbols is a useful skill for writers in all venues. When I give this presentation in person, I explain the symbolism and how it pertains to technical writing. Some people can follow the logical flow of the slides, while other people need verbal explanation. Click through and see if you recognize these symbols and can discern points I might make in a presentation. If you find your own interpretation and it differs from mine, that's valid too!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

4. WHERE I STARTED…
Grant proposal writing:
Mission, Goals, Objectives; start with the executive summary, re-
write until the last minute.
SDK documentation:
The tech-savvy love (live) to solve problems
−but−
if we don’t give them the context they need, they’re forced to solve
our problem before they get to solve theirs.
9. Screen writing is scene writing
To write a good scene:
• know why the scene is necessary.
• create a beginning, middle and end.
• make the day in which your scene takes
place, unlike any other.
• illustrate a change.
• to make the scene memorable, turn it by
adding a twist.
10. Scene types
Can you think of
structured authoring
topics as scenes?
Is structure
confining, or does it
free you to focus on
what’s important?

13. The Hero’s Journey
The “Hollywood Formula” emerged out of
“what works,” in three acts:
• Call to adventure resisted and then
answered.
• Journey into unknown to overcome
insurmountable obstacles.
• Victory and return with elixir.
14. Cross-cultural arcs
Identifying patterns that persist across
cultures helps to increase understanding.

20. Make exposition fun
Me
I think that when we do exposition really well, it becomes part
of the story itself and doesn't seem like exposition any more.
That, I think, is my take-away from this course.
Scott
Precisely. Either it's fascinating, mysterious or a revelation and
the content itself transcends exposition, or the way in which
it's conveyed via conflict, action or humor 'shrouds' the
exposition and comes across as entertaining. Thanks for
that summary. It's a keeper.
22. Bridge
• State of being—" "
• Archetypal—"As our top diplomat, he’s the
bridge between our cultures."
• Abstract symbolic—"Let’s build bridges between
our departments"
• Literal symbolic—"We’re using the conference
bridge."
• Objective reality—"I cross the Bay Bridge every
morning."
24. Realities of technology
• Technology thrives on specialization
• Each specialty has its own language and culture
• Specialists have internalized organizing
concepts and don’t mention them.
• Technical writers are interpreters
Risk when using specialist’s
descriptions for wider audiences:
discrete bits of information without
context makes them inaccessible
27. Chief O’Brien
It’s not a computer, it’s an adversary!
Devices as characters

28. Understanding the user POV
Under the right circumstances, people enjoy
solving problems,
−but−
if we don’t give them the context they need,
they’re forced to solve someone else’s
problem before they get to the point of
solving theirs.
29. Interactions between the user, their
goal, the device, software and Help
Do these map to the five archetypes?
Protagonist
Nemesis
Attractor
Mentor
Trickster
30. Quark
I’m stuck with you!
Odo
No, I’m stuck with you, which is infinitely worse!
Whose point of view? Does it matter?

31. DITA: Object Oriented
Authoring
• Topics are like scenes.
• Software architects tend to think in
metaphor, like writers.
• Stories might look linear but they are
neither linear in software nor in movies.
32. Lessons
• Find the stories.
• Writing is re-writing.
• Be aware of the characters.
• Don’t get distracted by the special effects.
• Sometimes our “worst” ideas are worthy.
• We write love stories for nerds.
