12. Started schooling at Gujrat, My
father was in Delhi at his job. I saw
the horrors of Partition.
After the creation of Pakistan moved
to Rawalpindi, then to Lahore.
13. At Lahore for high school I joined
Muzang Corporation School, Muzang
Adda.
Then I moved to Chishtia High School
situated behind Civil Secretariat in
Krishen Nagar. I passed my Matriculation
exam (1956) from there.

15. My father wanted me to become a doctor and study
at Government College, Lahore.

17. I wanted to study Economics and Psychology,
but the luck changed my course of studies.
18. I was taken to Punjab University by a cousin of
mine who was seeking admission in M.A. Economics.
19. So I opted for Economics and Fine Arts.

teacher. She painted my portrait

23. Khalid saheb was fond of cricket and we used to
listen running commentary of matches
together, there were no TVs.
At his small office I met several great
personalities of those days like
Moyene Najmi, Anwar Jalal Shemza, Raheel
Akbar Javed, Safdar, Sufi Tabassum, Faiz
Ahmad Faiz, Sadquain, Haneef Ramay, Shakir
Ali, Gilgee, Bashir Mirza, Ali Imam and Anwar
Ali Cartoonist and many more.
24. Then came the first
test of my life.
My father who was an
Income Tax Officer
retired from service in
1958.

25. We were three sisters and three brother.
All sisters were married at that time.
Eldest brother was chemical engineer.
Elder brother and I were still studying.
He was in MA while I was in BA.
My father on the day of his retirement called al his
sons and said, “My pension is only 150
rupees, if you want to carry on your studies
you will have earn and support yourselves.”
26. I explained my problem to my teacher
Khalid saheb, he thought for a while and
then asked,”Can you draw cartoons?”
I replied,”I can try, never drawn before.”
28. Haneef Ramay
published an weekly
Urdu magazine, I
was asked to make
six or seven
cartoons every
week, my salary
was fixed at Rupees
50 (fifty) a month.
That meant one
rupee per cartoon.
29. In the office of this
Weekly I met several
writers, poets and
politicians who came
there. One of them
was late Munir Niazi,
the famous poet. At
that time he was not
famous, unknown
and poor like me.

30. Munir Niazi used to get ten rupees for every ghazal
he contributed. Then I got a job for a monthly film
magazine Director also. I was given rupees 150
for making illustration, cartoons and for contributing
articles.
31. After earning some reputation I got a job of
cartoonist in an important daily newspaper
The Civil & Military Gazette. Now I was a rich
man earning nearly 450 rupees a month, I was
supporting myself, my brother and giving money to
my mother also.
32. After BA I joined MA Fine Arts classes at the
Punjab University. Studies and struggle
continued side by side.
A distance of ten kilometer from house to
university I covered everyday on bicycle, in
scorching summers and in chilling winters.
After finishing at the University I went to all the
three places for my part-time jobs.
33. Haneef Ramay’s
brother was running a
publishing house
Maktaba-i Jadeed.
This house published
a book that was
translation of Maxim
Gorky’s book
Mother.
34. Success of this book prompted Munir Niazi saheb to
suggest me to adopt Maxim as nom-de-plume. He
told me to sign all cartoons Maxim Shauki matching
Maxim Gorki. This was the time when first ghazal of
Munir saheb was used as a film song.
35. While studying for MA in FinArts we had Colin
David, Aslam Minhas and Soofi Waqar as our
seniors.
36. Luckily I stood first class first in MA Fine Arts exam
(1962), Won a gold medal and was awarded
Academic Roll of Honour by Government College,
Lahore. I got a job of lecturer at the University of
Engineering & Technology (UET), Lahore and
another long journey started.
37. A journey that started as a lecturer ended as a
Professor and Dean of Architecture & Planning
in 2000.

38. In 1976 I went to Edinburgh and studies at the
Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt University
for my M.Sc. in Urban and Architectural
Conservation.

39. After completing my MSc I joined University of
Edinburgh for PhD in Islamic Architecture
40. After completing my PhD I returned
to Pakistan in 1981 but left for Saudi Arabia to join
King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah.
41. In between there
were many ups and
downs. I was
appointed on merit
Principal of NCA but
an influential non-
qualified lady
grabbed that post
using political
influence.
42. During 1994-1998 I researched, scripted
and hosted about 300 TV documentaries for
PTV on National Heritage.
51. Immediately after retirement from UET
I was invited by International Islamic University
Malaysia (IIUM) to join as professor.

57. There beside being professor in Architecture
department I was also appointed Holder of Al-
Bukhari Chair for promotion of Islamic Arts and
Culture.

IIUM, Malaysia

64. I came back to Pakistan on the invitation of
HEC (Higher Education Commission) and was
appointed HEC Professor at the College of Art
& Design, Punjab University, Lahore. 2006.
