2. BRIEF SUMMARY OF BURKINA FASO
Burkina Faso is faced with high levels of food insecurity, being
one of the poorest countries in the world.
Burkina Faso has around 44.5% of its population living under
the poverty line and it is ranked 183 out of 187 countries on
the UNDP Human Development Index in 2014.
A large part of the economic activity of the country is funded by
international aid.
It was ranked the 111th safest investment destination in the
world in the March 2011 Euromoney Country Risk rankings.
Remittances used to be an important source of income to
Burkina Faso until the 1990s, when unrest in Ivory Coast, the
main destination for Burkinabe emigrants, forced many to return
home. Remittances now account for less than 1% of GDP.
The growth rate in Burkina Faso is high although it continues to
be plagued by corruption. 2
3. SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT
The proposed project is located in Gaoua, a region situated in
south western of Burkina Faso.
This region is characterised by high levels of food insecurity,
poverty and illiteracy.
The project consists of implementing an agronomical
school for women in 2 hectares of land, which aims to
reduce the following Sustainable Development Goals:
Reduce poverty, by generating incomes
Avoid futures famines, by reducing food insecurity
Improve education, towards training workshops
Allow access to clean drinking water, through the construction
of a well.
Based on clean energy, like solar panels that provide solar power
to the water borehole and the school.
Also, this project will contribute to reduce gender inequalities and
create a sustainable community, among others. 3
5. SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

Infrastructures to develop: Solar powered water
borehole, water storage tank, on-land food
processing capacity, space for training courses and

8. FUNDING SOURCE SELECTED
As we have learnt in this course, there are several
financial sources, like public finance, private finance
or multilateral development banks.
In this case, the option most apropriate is look for
funding in a Non-Govermental Organization (NGO),
because the money required is small and there are
several calls for proposals.
Particularly, for this project I have chosen a NGO
who is looking for proposals in west africa, based
on food insecurity and with a maximum funding
amount of $100.000.
