A population of scrub-jays live on Santa Cruz Island, off the coast of southern California. Jays with short beaks are more efficient at consuming acorns, while jays with long beaks consume pine seeds. The pine trees on Santa Cruz Island have been declining for over a decade due to prolonged drought and pests attacking the pine trees. The jays with short beaks are able to consume enough food, whereas the jays with long beaks are unable to collect enough nutrition to mate. As a result, we predict the average beak length will over time. This is most likely an example selection..
