God made the world from nothing in Genesis, makes a people from nothing in Exodus and threatens to make them jealous by going to the gentiles in Deuteromoy. "A people yet created' what the psalms have to say about that.
The song of Moses speaks of God making Israel jealous with a people who are not a nation
This is echoed by Isaiah which begins the same way as the song of Moses and ends with God calling 'Here I am! Here I am!" to a people who aren't even seeking him
Here we take a look at the use of this 'people yet to be born' in the Psalms
Safety through trusting in the LORD. In Psalms 125, David carries us through the reasons we can be secure when we are with God. The Psalm tells us about the hedge that God puts around those that are righteous and good. Who are the good?

Unexpected Discord In The Psalms - Psalm 73 though 89 version 5 ppt.pdfMichael Scaman
Following the mountaintop experience of the ending of book 2. The mic drop psalm 72 is followed by a crisis of faith in book 3, but begins 'surely God is good to Israel'
A very brief overview of Isaiah
Isiah;s prophesy is in part a response to the Song(s) of Moses
Moses called heaven and earth and withness and Isaiah calls heaven and earth in his openeing. Both promise chastizement but also redemption
and Isaiah and the song of Moses become remakable more like the New Testamant with regard to redemption.
-Redemption offered
-A son is given
- the voice crying in the dessert is prelude to songs of Messah
- true worship is exhorted
- the final servant song has Messiah rejected, suffer for sins, die and overcome death
- justice is exhorted
- Jerusalem goes from unfaithful to faithful and holy
- redemption is offered to the world
- in the 'new Jerusalem' rightousness dwells
- the book draws to a close with passages using wedding like celebration labguae like 'the marriage supper of the lamb does'
An Unlikely Duet: Isaiah and Bob DylanRoss Reddick
This is a presentation I put together for a chapel service at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. That week we were exploring Christian peace. On the last day, this presentation was where the sermon would normally go. It was a way to explore peace negatively. What does the *absence* of peace look like--well, sound like--in this case.
I paired selections of the Prophet Isaiah with the lyrics from Bob Dylan's famous song, "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." Isaiah and Bob could say it much better than I ever could. I let them speak.
The last slide was generated by tagxedo.com. The text used to generate the tag cloud came from senior answers to an ordination exam question (Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.) that dealt with Christian peace.

David's first book of Psalms was Psalms 1 through 41. Poetically like Genesis. It begins with a man who is like a tree of life and ends with a man like Joseph who is betrayed. Also like Genesis there is the inheritance of the land. The meek inherit the earth, in the Son, in God.
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms- book 5 - Psalm 107 though 150 version 8 p...Michael Scaman
Psalm book 5 is on the theme 'Coming Home' In prior books of Psalms the meek would inherit the earth but found themselves unfaithful and in exile. Now there is a redemptive resolution.

Psalms book 5 is on the theme 'Coming home" or entering te promised land. Poetically Deuteronomy.
Not only sharing the same overarching theme, but similar structure.
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms- book 4 - Psalm 90 though 106 version 7 pp...Michael Scaman
Book 2 and 3 ended very differently to eachother. Book 2 ended with an idylic future. Book 3 ended with a present crisis. The key changes and discord continues in book 4.
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms- book 4 - Psalm 90 though 106 version 6 pp...Michael Scaman
Psalms book 4 stands in contrast with books 2 which ended with an idylic future and book 3 which ends in a present crisis
The meek will inherit the earth as claimed in Psalm book 1 but not yet.
First there are trials and travails of this life and a retrospective and pro-spective in Book 4.

Book 4 of Psalms . Lots of contrasts. The sheperd king leads us through the trials and trails of life in this book which is a poetic takeoff on the book of Nubers
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms - Psalm 42 though 72 version 11 ppt pdf.pdfMichael Scaman
Psalms book 2: Ps 42 to 72 has Jesus flipping the script from his troubles more than the hairs of His head to a comfort the God knows the hairs on your head. Many key changes and contrasts explored here.

Book1 of Psalms is poetically like Genesis. It starts with a man who is like a tree of life and ends wit a man who is betrayed like Joseph. Jesus quotes the final Psalm at the last supper.
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms - Psalm 1 though 41 version 10 ppt PDF.pdfMichael Scaman
The book of Pslams has a flow, sometimes unexpected. We see a praise in the midst of laments or a lament in the midst of praises. Why? Like a musical work where discord resolves to beauty some examples given here.
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms - Psalm 1 though 41 version 4 ppt.pptxMichael Scaman
In the flow of the Psalms we might see a run of praises then a seemingly out of place lament. Why? We might see the opposite as well. This is a look at the flow of Psalms book 1, Psalms 1-41.
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms - Psalm 1 though 41 version 3 ppt pdf.pdfMichael Scaman
Psalms book 1 is David's first Psalm book. Psalms 1 through 41. Some laments seem out of place with praises and visa versa. However, te discord resolves to a picture of Jesus
Unexpected Discord In The Psalms: part 2 - Psalm 15 though 25 Michael Scaman
The flow of Psalms in Psalm 14 though 25, particularly with a view to key changes. Who can climb the mountain of God, then there is a literary mountain, a chiasm from 15 though 24.
Unexpected Discord In The Flow of Psalms: part 1 - Psalms 1 though 14 Michael Scaman
Places in the Psalms where we see unexpected contrasts in the flow of Psalms. For example we might go unexpectedly from rejoicing to lamenting. Psalms 1- Psalms 14 which is the start of Psalms book 1, Psalms 1 through 41.
The Son inherits the nations in Psalm 2 is contrasted with David on the run from his son in Psalm 3.
The man in Psalm 8 ruling in a special place in creation is contrasted with the man of the earth is Psalms 9 and 10 with laments following how long will evil go on and if indeed no one is righteous, no not one, then who can climb the mountain of God and dwell in His tent?
We compare this set of Psalms with the rest of Book 1. The son inherits the earth in Psalm 2. The meek inherits the earth in Psalm 37. We see Psalm book 1 as a literary parallel to Genesis where Psalm book 1 starts with a man who is like a tree of life and ends with a man like Joseph who is betrayed to save the World.
We see some themes come back later in Psalms such as "I am a green tree" in Psalm 52 or "there is no one good no not one", Psalm 14 repeated very closely in Psalm 53

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

'A People yet to be Created' in the Psalms - Three songs pointing to Jesus
1. ‘A people yet
from the Psalms
Three songs for a people yet to be born
all pointing to Jesus
to be created’
2. • In Genesis - God made the world from nothing
• In Exodus - God makes a people (as if) from nothing
• In Deuteronomy - God prophesies to make his
people jealous by going to the gentiles
• In Isaiah the prophesy repeated and extended
A people yet to be created
‘A people yet
to be created’
3. Deut 32:21
They have made me jealous with what is no god;
they have provoked me to anger with their idols.
So I will make them jealous with those who are no
people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish
nation.
At the end of Moses life,
a song of Moses
a prophesy
God will use ‘a people who are not a people’
(to make the Jews jealous)
4. The song of Moses and Isaiah both
start the same way
Listen, Oh heavens and hear oh earth
for the Lord speaks!
Moses speaks of a future falling away of Israel
Isaiah says it is here
The three places Isaiah uses the phrase
‘here am I’ are helpful in shedding light on that
5. Isaiah 65:1
I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask
for me; I was ready to be found by those who did not
seek me. I said, “Here I am, here I am,” to a nation
that was not called by my name.
Isaiah 6:8
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you
shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you take away
the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and
speaking wickedness,
Isaiah 58:9
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I
send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am!
Send me.
after a godward repentance of Israel (or anyone)
after a vision of God’s glory and purification by God
after God’s drawing a people who aren’t even looking for God
6. Romans 10:19-21
19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,
“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”
20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,
“I have been found by those who did not seek me;
I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”
21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my
hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”
Because Isaiah (in part) echos
the song of Moses where God prophesies
that he will make the Jews jealous by going to the gentiles
we can reasonable take Isaiah 65 as that
( Paul does so in Romans)
God will show Himself to a nation not Israel
figuratively shouting ‘here I am’ (repeating the phrase
is a form of emphasis)
7. We examine the Psalms in the light of
what it says about this ‘future people’
who Paul says is the church
We see this strongly referred to
in Psalm 22 and Psalm 102
8. Psalm 22 starts “my God, my God
why have you forsaken me”
Psalm 22 ends with a people
yet to be born hearing of his righteousness
‘A people yet unborn’
A suffering forsaken servant
9. Psalm 22:29-31
All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
those who cannot keep themselves alive.
Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!
A people yet unborn
will both be told of and proclaim of the righteousness of the
suffering servant in Psalm 22
The righteousness of the suffering servant
is key - as Jesus righteousness is to the gospel
10. Psalm 22:27
All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him
Psalm 22:22-23
I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you.
You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
Salvation for Israel
Salvation for the ends of the earth
11. Psalm 102:18
Let this be written for a future generation, that a
people not yet created may praise the Lord:
A people yet created
Psalm 102
A prayer of an “afflicted person who has grown weak and
pours out a lament before the Lord”
will be told to
‘A people yet to be created’
12. Psalm 102 is used as an argument
that Jesus is greater than the angels
(in the book of Hebrews)
A model of a prayer of desperation
which could not be said to an angel
but could be said to Jesus
The model of a dependent prayer of need
would fit glorifying God by one’s dependency
on Him, leaning on the cross believing for eternal life
both now and in the future
13. Psalm 78 concerns a man who has
parables and who is a parable
Jesus not only used parables
but his life was a parable
and a recapitulation
of the history of Israel
getting it right -
sinless and righteous
14. Psalm 78 has a lesson about the falling away
of Israel as part of the lesson
With Israel as the one falling away
and the man who has parables and is a parable of
‘getting it right’ (parables with in a parable)
The warning and lesson (aka parable) is put before
the next generation to learn from it
15. Psalm 78 concerns a man who has
parables and who is a parable
Jesus not only used parables
but his life was a parable
and a recapitulation
of the history of Israel
getting it right -
sinless and righteous
16. And concerns:
- a man who is a parable and has
parables (sounds like Jesus)
- a story of a falling away of Israel
(sounds like the Song of Moses and a
parable of sorts of its own)
- and learning from it
Psalm 78 is one of the longest Psalms
‘the next generation’
‘I will speak in parables
17. Psalm 78:5-8
He decreed statutes for Jacob
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children…..
The next generation
even children yet to be born
‘the next generation’
18. Psalm 78:5-8
….Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
but would keep his commands.
They would not be like their ancestors—
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
Which also fits a purpose of God
in ‘making Jews jealous’
‘the next generation’
Which is to bring them back to Him
19. Isaiah and Deuteronomy both
speak of God revealing himself to a people not Israel
Psalms speaks both of
salvation for Israel as well as
a people unborn, a people yet to be creation,
salvation for the ends of the earth.
And why not?
God promised all families on earth to be
blessed through a descendant of Abraham
20. The strength is spent of Israel
and they can’t sing, but God will make ‘all kings sing’
138
fAll the kings of the earth shall
give you thanks, O LORD,
for they have heard the words of
your mouth,
5 and they shall sing of gthe ways
of the LORD,
for great is the glory of the LORD.
137
By the waters of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept,
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the willows1 there
we hung up our lyres.
3 For there our captors
required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying,
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 sHow shall we sing the LORD's song
in a foreign land?
21. In the shortest Psalm
an invitation to the nations
Come enjoy the goodness of God!
117
Praise the LORD, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
2 For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise the LORD!
