Introductory Glossary
Ketuvim: Is the third and final section of the Bible (Tanach)—the Written Torah.
Masoretic Text: Derived from masorah, meaning "tradition"; the Masoretes were the rabbis in ninth-century
Palestine who sought to preserve the traditional text of the Bible (hence called the Masoretic text), which is still used
in contemporary synagogues. The Masoretes were scholars who encouraged Bible study and attempted to achieve
uniformity by establishing rules for correcting the text in matters of spelling, grammar and pronunciation. Masoretic
(adj.) means that something is in accordance with the masorah.
Nevi'im: Biblical writings and stories of Prophets
Tanach: The bible; acronym for Torah (i.e., the Five Books of Moses), Nevi’im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (the
“Writings”; i.e., the Hagiographa).
Targum: Generally used to designate Aramaic translations of the Jewish scriptures.
Torah: The Five Books of Moses (The Bible); (b) the overall body of Jewish religious teachings encompassing the
whole body of Jewish law, practice and tradition.
2. Torah
These are the generations of Noah, Noah was a righteous man he was perfect in his generations; Noah
walked with God (Genesis 6:9)
And the Lord said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, for it is you that I have seen as
a righteous man before Me in this generation (Genesis 7:1)
And God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: "And I, behold I am setting up My covenant with
you and with your seed after you (Genesis 9:8-9)
And God said: "This is the sign of the covenant, which I am placing between Me and between you, and
between every living soul that is with you, for everlasting generations. My rainbow I have placed in the

Nevi'im

arm, and he will come and pray toward this house. You shall hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do
