Two more memos were sent which contained vicious and scathing remarks against Smith including remarks that he was not wanted in the corporation and the sender would not stop until Smith had quit. Alarmed further by the memos and his managers response, Smith went to senior management with his concerns, only to experience a similar response to the one he had received from his manager. Smith informed senior management that he would be filing a formal grievance. His employment was terminated the next day. Smith then filed a law suit against the company for harassment and wrongful termination. Summary
International Paper (IP), the world’s largest forest products
company, owns the Androscoggin Mill, a large pulp and paper
mill in Jay, Maine, in the nor theastern United States. This case
study describes the transformation of the Androscoggin Mill
from an object of public opprobrium and con�ict to a show-
case for environmental management. In the late 1980s, an 18-
month strike had embittered workers and townspeople and
left the mill’s reputation in tatters. In response to mill environ-
mental violations, some of which were considered crimes by
state regulators, the town of Jay passed its own environmental
ordinance to control mill emissions. Early in the 1990s, new
management, including two former corporate-level employ-
ees, sought to change the mill’s business approach and turn
the Androscoggin Mill into IP’s best environmental performer.
The initial emphasis on establishing and maintaining compli-
ance was expanded to include aggressive pollution prevention
effor ts that led to cooperative projects with the Maine De-
par tment of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, and stakeholder groups. The mill’s ap-
proach in the 1990s evolved further to essentially follow prin-
ciples of industrial ecology. New approaches focused on “clos-
ing the loop” by �nding bene�cial uses for previously land�lled
wastes, replacements for most hazardous chemicals, and re-
ductions in solid and hazardous waste generation. The mill also
pursued the establishment of symbiotic relationships with a
facility that began using a mill by-product on-site and an on-
site natural gas burning facility that provided par t of the mill’s
steam demand. IP also established a public advisory committee
in 1992 to advise management on operational and “big-
picture” issues, which later included the application of sustain-
ability criteria to the mill. IP has since formed community ad-
visory committees at each of their integrated pulp and paper
mills.

1. In short, abnormal behavior, thoughts and emotions, are those that differ from society's definition of properly functioning, or the norm (Comer, 2018). These norms tend to differ between cultures which help to establish rules for proper conduct. What constitutes as abnormal behavior depends on specific circumstances and cultural norms (Comer, 2018). An example of abnormal behavior could be unusualness like a person who lives with many animals and isolates themselves from society. The behavior of this person is deviant and may be dysfunctional, but could be seen as eccentric rather than abnormal to a professional.
2. Abnormal behavior, in simple terms, is behavior outside of societal norms (Comer, 2018). Abnormalities differ based on what society you come from. Generally speaking, being considered normal means that you are complying by your society’s standards. Abnormalities arise when behavior is deviant, distressing, dysfunctional, or dangerous. An example of abnormal behavior would be manic behavior. A manic episode typically involves less sleep, risky behavior, irritability, increased talking, and even hypersexuality (Purse, 2019). This is typically deviant from the person’s normal behavior by definition. The manic behavior can be distressing for both the affected and their family or other loved ones. Risky behavior causes worry and distress. Irritability can create all sorts of distressing situations. When a person is manic, they are in a state of dysfunction. Memory and responsibilities often fall to the backburner while the manic episode rides its course. Of all the things that define abnormal behavior, a manic episode can be especially dangerous to both the person experiencing it as well as the others around them because it involves risky behavior—which implies many things from gambling to drugs. It often results in the person experiencing the episode being hospitalized.
3. “One common conceptualization of abnormality focuses on what is often called the Four Ds: deviance, distress, dysfunction, and danger (Topic 1 Resource, 2018).” An example of abnormal behavior is someone who hears voices telling them to do certain things. Background
Mary Evelyn Greene, who has memory impairment, lives in a private room at Shady Brook Skilled Nursing Facility located in a beautiful suburb of a major metropolitan city. She has resided at Shady Brook for the past 18 months. Before moving into Shady Brook, Mrs. Greene lived independently in her own home with assistance from a private-duty nursing assistant and a housekeeper. She and her husband had resided together in this home for more than 50 years. Mrs. Greene is 89 years old and suffers from several health problems associated with aging.
Mrs. Greene has one son, David Greene. David has the power of attorney to handle his mother’s health care and other personal affairs. David works as a trial attorney in one of the city’s largest and most prestigious law firms. He owns a large home in an upscale neighborhood and works hard to put two of his children through college and another one through medical school. His home is about an hour’s drive from his workplace and about 20 minutes from Shady Brook. David’s wife Barbara has never been close to her mother-in-law and has not shown much interest in her care. Hence, caring for his mother has become a major responsibility for David, and he is having a difficult time dealing with her declining health and the onset of mild dementia. It is becoming increasingly more difficult for David to leave his law practice or the court room to deal with issues related to his mother.
Mrs. Greene’s husband was a very successful land developer who left her with a substantial estate, which meets all of her financial needs. After her husband passed away, Mrs. Greene decided to remain in her home. She was able to maintain her independence until she was 87 years old, when she began to show signs of dementia. Shortly thereafter, David moved her to Shady Brook. David also hired a part-time “sitter” to keep her mother company because she was too weak to go out of her room on her own. Mrs. Greene seems to enjoy the sitter’s company and likes the attention she gets.
Upon entering Shady Brook, Mrs. Greene became depressed over losing her independence and her home and felt a growing frustration with forgetfulness. She gradually lost her appetite, and her desire to eat continued to decline. On the other hand, Mrs. Greene seems to enjoy the smell of certain foods. The associates monitor and document her food intake and her facial expressions when she is offered different foods. Mrs. Greene is particularly fond of Susan Brown, a certified nursing assistant (CNA), who sits with her and helps Mrs. Greene with whatever little she can eat. When this occurs, her appetite shows some improvement. Mrs. Greene also responds well to volunteers who carry out activities at the facility.

Summary
International Paper (IP), the world’s largest forest products
company, owns the Androscoggin Mill, a large pulp and paper
mill in Jay, Maine, in the nor theastern United States. This case
study describes the transformation of the Androscoggin Mill
from an object of public opprobrium and con�ict to a show-
case for environmental management. In the late 1980s, an 18-
month strike had embittered workers and townspeople and
left the mill’s reputation in tatters. In response to mill environ-
mental violations, some of which were considered crimes by
state regulators, the town of Jay passed its own environmental
ordinance to control mill emissions. Early in the 1990s, new
management, including two former corporate-level employ-
ees, sought to change the mill’s business approach and turn
the Androscoggin Mill into IP’s best environmental performer.
The initial emphasis on establishing and maintaining compli-
ance was expanded to include aggressive pollution prevention
effor ts that led to cooperative projects with the Maine De-
par tment of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, and stakeholder groups. The mill’s ap-
proach in the 1990s evolved further to essentially follow prin-
ciples of industrial ecology. New approaches focused on “clos-
ing the loop” by �nding bene�cial uses for previously land�lled
wastes, replacements for most hazardous chemicals, and re-
ductions in solid and hazardous waste generation. The mill also
pursued the establishment of symbiotic relationships with a
facility that began using a mill by-product on-site and an on-
site natural gas burning facility that provided par t of the mill’s
steam demand. IP also established a public advisory committee
in 1992 to advise management on operational and “big-
picture” issues, which later included the application of sustain-
ability criteria to the mill. IP has since formed community ad-
visory committees at each of their integrated pulp and paper
mills.

1. In short, abnormal behavior, thoughts and emotions, are those that differ from society's definition of properly functioning, or the norm (Comer, 2018). These norms tend to differ between cultures which help to establish rules for proper conduct. What constitutes as abnormal behavior depends on specific circumstances and cultural norms (Comer, 2018). An example of abnormal behavior could be unusualness like a person who lives with many animals and isolates themselves from society. The behavior of this person is deviant and may be dysfunctional, but could be seen as eccentric rather than abnormal to a professional.
2. Abnormal behavior, in simple terms, is behavior outside of societal norms (Comer, 2018). Abnormalities differ based on what society you come from. Generally speaking, being considered normal means that you are complying by your society’s standards. Abnormalities arise when behavior is deviant, distressing, dysfunctional, or dangerous. An example of abnormal behavior would be manic behavior. A manic episode typically involves less sleep, risky behavior, irritability, increased talking, and even hypersexuality (Purse, 2019). This is typically deviant from the person’s normal behavior by definition. The manic behavior can be distressing for both the affected and their family or other loved ones. Risky behavior causes worry and distress. Irritability can create all sorts of distressing situations. When a person is manic, they are in a state of dysfunction. Memory and responsibilities often fall to the backburner while the manic episode rides its course. Of all the things that define abnormal behavior, a manic episode can be especially dangerous to both the person experiencing it as well as the others around them because it involves risky behavior—which implies many things from gambling to drugs. It often results in the person experiencing the episode being hospitalized.
3. “One common conceptualization of abnormality focuses on what is often called the Four Ds: deviance, distress, dysfunction, and danger (Topic 1 Resource, 2018).” An example of abnormal behavior is someone who hears voices telling them to do certain things. Some people may show this kind of abnormal behavior out of nowhere, or they have always heard these voices. This person can be deviant to their old life once they start hearing these voices and if they listen to them or not. These voices can cause distress to the person as well because if they listen to the voices, then they might start doing bad things. These voices can also cause dysfunction in this person life and how they act around others. Having this abnormal behavior can .

Background
Mary Evelyn Greene, who has memory impairment, lives in a private room at Shady Brook Skilled Nursing Facility located in a beautiful suburb of a major metropolitan city. She has resided at Shady Brook for the past 18 months. Before moving into Shady Brook, Mrs. Greene lived independently in her own home with assistance from a private-duty nursing assistant and a housekeeper. She and her husband had resided together in this home for more than 50 years. Mrs. Greene is 89 years old and suffers from several health problems associated with aging.
Mrs. Greene has one son, David Greene. David has the power of attorney to handle his mother’s health care and other personal affairs. David works as a trial attorney in one of the city’s largest and most prestigious law firms. He owns a large home in an upscale neighborhood and works hard to put two of his children through college and another one through medical school. His home is about an hour’s drive from his workplace and about 20 minutes from Shady Brook. David’s wife Barbara has never been close to her mother-in-law and has not shown much interest in her care. Hence, caring for his mother has become a major responsibility for David, and he is having a difficult time dealing with her declining health and the onset of mild dementia. It is becoming increasingly more difficult for David to leave his law practice or the court room to deal with issues related to his mother.
Mrs. Greene’s husband was a very successful land developer who left her with a substantial estate, which meets all of her financial needs. After her husband passed away, Mrs. Greene decided to remain in her home. She was able to maintain her independence until she was 87 years old, when she began to show signs of dementia. Shortly thereafter, David moved her to Shady Brook. David also hired a part-time “sitter” to keep her mother company because she was too weak to go out of her room on her own. Mrs. Greene seems to enjoy the sitter’s company and likes the attention she gets.
Upon entering Shady Brook, Mrs. Greene became depressed over losing her independence and her home and felt a growing frustration with forgetfulness. She gradually lost her appetite, and her desire to eat continued to decline. On the other hand, Mrs. Greene seems to enjoy the smell of certain foods. The associates monitor and document her food intake and her facial expressions when she is offered different foods. Mrs. Greene is particularly fond of Susan Brown, a certified nursing assistant (CNA), who sits with her and helps Mrs. Greene with whatever little she can eat. When this occurs, her appetite shows some improvement. Mrs. Greene also responds well to volunteers who carry out activities at the facility.

- 1. A memo in both electronic and hard copy was sent within the PRQ Corporation that disparaged and employee, George Smith. Smith informed his manager of the incident. Rather than receiving the response he expected, the manager belittled Smith and told him to lighten up. Two more memos were sent which contained vicious and scathing remarks against Smith including remarks that he was not wanted in the corporation and the sender would not stop until Smith had quit. Alarmed further by the memos and his managers response, Smith went to senior management with his concerns, only to experience a similar response to the one he had received from his manager. Smith informed senior management that he would be filing a formal grievance. His employment was terminated the next day. Smith then filed a law suit against the company for harassment and wrongful termination. The only evidence that Smith had were hard copies of the memos. 1, Is the evidence Smith has enough to prove his case in court? 2. What other evidence does Smith need? 3.
