Pencil Drawing
& Artworks
2. 1. Hatching & Cross-Hatching
The process of hatching is basically a
series in lines that you draw along
your primary part of your sketch, to
create shadows and depth.
These lines shouldn't cross. Cross
hatching is a sequence of lines
drawn similarly however, where they
cross
3. 2. Stippling
The art of stippling involves adding dots
to create depth and shading. It is like
cross-hatching. The more dots you have
will be, the greater the impact.
Make sure that your dots stand clearly &
create a more powerful impact, choose a
lighter graphite for this effect since pencil
drawing will appear more dark.
4. 3. Scribbling
The signs of a sketch that is scribbled can
be seen in the uneven, erratic and
certainly not straight lines in the sketch
Random movements across the paper
results in a deconstructed look and those
with more irregular lines drawn closer to
each other the darker the sketch appears
5. 4. Circling
You can control the tone that your
pencil emits by altering the
pressure that you put on the
pencil.
To achieve smooth transitions,
you can create tiny circular
strokes that create a more
blended appearance.
6. 5. Smooth Shading & Blending
For a smoother shading aspect to
your drawing you could attempt
smooth shading.
This can be accomplished by a
variety of methods such as using
your fingers or a sheet of paper
hatching in or cross hatching.
This gives your drawing a smoother
look.
7. 6. Creating Highlights
Similar to how you add shading to add
shadows and depth on your sketches, you
may also add highlights
Highlights can be used to indicate the
direction your light source is coming from
and provide additional depth, while also
highlighting reflective surfaces.
8. 7. Rendering
The art of rendering takes the
method to a higher step.
Rendering is basically a method to
pencil sketching
Where you apply graphite on your
paper and then erase it by using
your eraser to give the effect of
highlighting.
